"I contacted Quality Home Improvements about a number of renovation projects I wanted to complete, but I had several ideas in mind. Brad was very helpful when making decisions on things that were on my dream list, while also keeping my budget in mind. There were a few things that I knew before hand that I wanted for sure, one being certain lighting, but Brad had better options available for me than I even knew about. His experience helped a lot because I wasn't aware of all of the details that go into renovating a home. He had suggestions on everything and even talked me out of things that I thought would work good in my home, but he knew it wasn't the right fit for what I was wanting. It was helpful that he has worked with a number of different products so he could tell me the pros and cons to different things. I was also impressed that when Brad told me he was going to do something or be somewhere, he was always there. Every day he said he was going to be working on my house, he was there. It was helpful in keeping the renovating process stress free because I felt that things were moving along in the process, instead of feeling like things were at a standstill. I have no complaints about this process with Quality Home Improvements. It actually went a lot smoother than I ever anticipated and I think that was due to having a contractor who was well experienced. His work is VERY TEDIOUS and there is nothing that I saw that I wished had been done better. My house was always left in the condition that I left it or better, and remnants from working were always picked up. If I ever need any other remodel work done, I know who I will contact."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Before starting home building, gather details about your specific site conditions. Identify your soil type, as expansive clay heavily impacts foundation design. Check local floodplain maps and zoning designations to determine your allowable structure height and setback limits. You should also review your permit history to uncover any unpermitted prior work. Finally, confirm utility easements along your property lines, as these restrict where you place permanent structures in NE.

Helpful?

Assess your foundation first, since expansive clay soils cause significant settlement and bowing walls. Hire a structural engineer to evaluate any concerning cracks before planning home building. Next, confirm your zoning allows the intended project type and check your remaining buildable area against required setbacks. For older properties, verify your electrical service capacity, as 60-amp or 100-amp systems require upgrades to support modern electrical loads in Omaha.

Helpful?

Completing permitted home building increases your resale appeal, provided you stay within your neighborhood price ceiling. Finished basements and energy efficiency upgrades offer excellent returns due to regional climate extremes. Adding in-ground storm shelters also creates a strong competitive advantage in the Omaha market. Conversely, converting an attached garage into living space reduces your property value, as local buyers expect protected parking during harsh winter months.

Helpful?

To build a reliable seasonal inspection routine for home building, focus on Omaha's extreme weather shifts. In spring, check your foundation for freeze-thaw damage and inspect sump pumps before heavy rains. During summer, evaluate attic ventilation to prevent roof deterioration. In fall, verify that grading slopes away from your foundation. When winter arrives, monitor roof edges for ice dams and inspect exposed pipes in unheated spaces to prevent freezing.

Helpful?

When planning home building, account for the mandatory 36-inch frost depth requirement for all new footings. Account for high wind loads and storm resistance, especially if you add outbuildings or safe rooms. Review your architectural control committee guidelines if you live in a suburban subdivision. Finally, schedule licensed contractors well in advance during the peak spring and summer demand periods across NE to keep your project on track.
