"I hired Mike (certified arborist) and his crew to remove a large cottonwood (47 inch diameter trunk) and to grind the stump. I actually solicited quotes from five different tree removal firms and Out On A Limb was the low bid. Since they had a good review on Angie's List, I did not hesitate to accept their bid. Mike called me a couple days before he wanted to start and showed up on time. His crew was very hard working, professional, and safety minded. There was another tree very close to the tree that was removed and they did not damage a single branch on that tree. Stump grinding was completed the next morning and cleanup was satisfactory. I would definitely hire Out on a Limb again."

"I would highly recommend Rivera's! They are professional, friendly, hard working, and do an excellent job. A man of his word. . . shows up on time, does what he says with his crew, and impeccable clean up! I had 2 overgrown trees, an Oak tree and River Birch. I have no idea how they climbed to such precarious heights to trim the Oak tree, but they did. After being so impressed with the job on the Oak tree, I asked him to trim the River Birch as well. Both trees look amazing! My neighbor 2 houses down was so impressed, that they hired them on the spot the same day. This was such a positive experience and refreshing to find a company that responds, stands by their word, completes the job, and does so, so well!"

"Paul answered my request promptly - was well prepared for the interview ( pictures of walls and blocks available) he listened to what we wanted and was able to work with in our budget and the time frame that we needed. The workers that he sent out to replace the wall were very polite and were experienced in what they were doing. They did a great job and cleanup. I highly recommend Paul Greenway and will look forward to working with him on other projects."

"Ed and his crew were awesome to work with! They designed several ideas to go with our new contemporary lake home to give it that extra pop with lush sod, beautiful trees, shrubs and flowering plants. The crew worked very hard to meet our expectations and we are super pleased with the results!"

"Great job! They did a very professional, thorough upfront planning prior to installation. The installation team was very courteous. We were quite pleased with the system. They also offer other services, so it is nice to be able to use one company. We are having them do aerating and over-seeding next."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

The ideal depth of a tree notch depends on the tree, but it should usually be between 20% and 25% of the tree’s depth. However, if the tree is leaning towards the direction of the notch, it can be cut more shallowly—at as little as 10% of the depth. When the tree is leaning away from the direction it needs to be felled, you can cut deeper, closer to 30%.

An unsafe tree can cause serious damage to your home and property, so tree inspections are important to ensure your home isn’t in danger from a nearby tree. Unhealthy trees can also be unsafe trees, as diseases and insect damage can compromise a tree’s stability, leading to potential damage and safety risks.

The best time to transplant a tree is when it is dormant. For many trees, this means either in the fall after the leaves have dropped (around October or November) or in early spring before new growth begins (around March). The ideal timing can depend on the type of tree. Deciduous trees do well when moved in early spring or fall, while evergreens are best transplanted in early spring or late summer. For example, pine trees are best moved in early fall, but maples prefer late fall. Avoid transplanting in winter, as the frozen or hard, cold soil poses a significant risk to the roots and prevents the tree from acclimating properly.

For Bradford pears, damage from storms is common, and if the trunk splits, it can pose a danger to people and surrounding structures. The best thing to do in that instance is to have the tree removed. If there’s only minor damage to the branches, pruning away the damaged parts is the first order of business. You may also want to consult a professional arborist to make sure the tree is healthy.

Leaving the tree stump and letting it rot is never a good idea, as this leads to insect infestations and other frustrations. Additionally, decomposing trunks are at risk for diseases that spread out to the remaining plants and trees in the yard, thus ruining your whole outdoor aesthetic. It's usually best to remove the stump at the same time you remove the tree.
