Since it was so nice to not have to deal with spiders, ants, and other pesky insects last year we decided it was worth it to have a general treatment done this year and will probably continue on an annual basis. Some believe that essential oils, like peppermint, may work the way that roach-repellent foods do: the roaches do not like the smell that the oil is producing and so they stay away. While essential oils can deter roaches from surfaces, they do not fight an infestation. Use essential oils as a prevention method, not a removal method.

Sprinkling garlic powder, placing mint or lavender plants, or using essential oils like citronella, clove, or tea tree can create an unwelcoming environment for them. Both spikes and loose nets can be installed over nest sites to prevent the bird from returning, but nets are not a humane option since birds and other wildlife can get tangled in them.
