"My home has a chimney that was unsafe to use (cracked masonry liner). I dreaded the time and cost of a tear down and replacement. I contacted "Shamrock Chimney" and scheduled an appointment with their lead technician "Tony". He suggested a less costly and safer alternative (steel liner and a resealing of the outer brickwork. The work was performed over a two-day period. I am fully satisfied with the results. One thing I really apricate is the communication during the project. The "front office" would let me know by either phone or email when the project would start, and then Tony and would give me updates. All and all the whole process went smoothly. Also, this was my first time with "Angi", I hope to use their services again in the future."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Regular masonry work involves repointing deteriorating mortar joints and removing biological growth like algae and mold caused by the humid NC climate. Inspect chimney crowns for cracks after winter and clear debris from concrete control joints to accommodate seasonal soil movement. Schedule a thorough inspection after tropical storms to catch water intrusion early and keep your brick structures completely secure.

Helpful?

Watch for brick faces breaking away or spalling, which indicates previous masonry work used overly hard cement mortar. Recurring white salt deposits on foundation walls show that past repairs missed the underlying moisture issue. Reappearing stair-step cracks in your Wilson home point to ongoing clay soil movement. Painted or caulked chimney joints also signal improper past repairs requiring immediate professional repointing.

Helpful?

Address horizontal foundation cracks, bulging brick veneer, and active water leaks immediately to prevent severe structural failure. Open chimney joints require urgent masonry work before Wilson enters tropical storm season. Defer minor mortar erosion or cosmetic concrete hairline cracks until the mild fall or spring months. Monitor efflorescence closely, but schedule the repair within one full season to protect your property.

Helpful?

In Wilson, your brick veneer exterior walls and chimneys are prime candidates for masonry work. High annual rainfall and periodic freeze-thaw cycles degrade mortar joints over time. Expansive clay soils throughout the area cause concrete block foundations and flatwork to shift and crack. Front steps and stoops also face significant water infiltration, requiring prompt repointing to prevent long-term structural damage.

Helpful?

Analyze the specific symptoms to determine if you need masonry work. Stair-step cracks in brick veneer indicate foundation movement, while horizontal block wall cracks require structural masonry intervention. If water appears near your chimney only during wind-driven rain, suspect a roofing flashing issue. Constant water entry during any NC rainstorm points directly to failed mortar joints requiring a licensed contractor.
