"I am so glad that I chose H&M Contractor LLC to replace a middle section of my kitchen/family room that was damaged due to a busted pipe in the attic. I initially interviewed 4 contractors and H&M Contractor was #1 by far. The owner, Henry, did not hesitate to tell me how he would go about doing the repair when I asked. He also was honest when I asked if I needed to replace the whole ceiling or just the section that was damaged. I was not at home for 90% of the time but Henry sent pictures of the work as it progressed. He and his team were on time every day and ready to work. Most important is the fact that his price was fair and he did not try to push any additional services that I did not ask for or need. However, I will be hiring him again soon for another project. He promised that he would do an excellent job and he kept his word. I love his work ethic. I give this contractor 5 stars!"

"Geo and his team recently performed exterior repair work on my home to fix rotting wood along corners and gables. The work was extensive and very detailed. The work was thorough and of the highest quality. We were extremely happy and satisfied with the repairs Geo and his crew performed. The work wasn’t easy, the front of the house sits on a tall sloping hill where ladders need to go. His team handled this wonderfully and kept the landscaping intact. From the initial estimate until the final walk-through Geo was courteous and professional and gave meaningful suggestions about which materials to use and where the issues were. It felt more like a close collaboration than just some “contractors”. It was greatly appreciated. We will definitely be using Geo again for future projects."

"Irek and Jeffrey from Independent Carpenters Association did outstanding work on a repair for our house. They bring a great deal of knowledge and pride in their craft and are worth every penny they charge. Our water damaged ceiling looked better than it did originally when they left. There work is great and I felt comfortable having them around my home. I happily recommend them."

"Mr. John Dean came quickly to give us a fair estimate, including the purchase and deliver for the needs. Within a week, he completed with the high quality work: repairing the deck and left a new face of our deck. We had fantastic experience with John and his team. They communicated clearly throughout the project, and delivered high-quality craftsmanship. Will definitely hire them for future projects! Thanks!"

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

If you don’t have a power saw with a blade where you can adjust the angle, you could use a miter box and hand saw to make the cuts. The miter box contains wide slots to support the piece of baseboard and other narrow slots to accommodate the blade of the hand saw. However, it’s tough to make non-standard cuts beyond 30 or 45 degrees when using a miter box.

If you don’t have a coping saw, you can use an angle grinder to cope crown molding, but it takes a little more precision. Place your molding down on your workbench, angle the grinder at a 45-degree angle toward the molding, and back cut the wood. You’ll need to carefully angle your grinder to accommodate the curves in the wood, and aim to remove around 1 inch from the profile of the molding.

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.

There are two ways you can cut trim for doorways: with a miter saw or a table saw. Mitered joints need a 45-degree angle. If you’re unfamiliar with a miter saw, you might want to consider buying extra trim pieces or choosing butted joints instead. One wrong cut, and you’ll need to power up the saw again with a new piece.

Butted joints—also called shaker style—don’t need a 45-degree angle. Instead, your side pieces attach perpendicularly to the header trim and only require a straight cut.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.
