"First off, wouldn't call him a pro. Hired him for a deck rebuild...granted we made changes along the way and the bill increased, which we agreed to...paid him every penny he asked for(even being charged almost $300 to put visqueen on the windows so we could paint... an hour and a half job that he paid his girlfriend, her brother, and a friend for) until he walked off the job because we were being "too picky." His workers damaged siding that he hasn't replaced. He ordered the wrong deck rails. Electrical work as a separate job, he replaced a bathroom fan that doesn't work properly. "

Electrical questions, answered by experts

If your home already has wires for a ceiling fan (and optional light kit), then it’s quite safe to wire and install it yourself. Always be very careful to shut off the power before you begin, and confirm that the power is safely off with a non-contact voltage tester before touching anything. It’s also highly recommended to use eye protection, rubberized gloves, and tools with rubber handles to keep yourself safe from electric shock.

The National Electric Code requires at least one GFCI outlet in each sectioned-off portion of a finished or unfinished basement and at least one GFCI outlet per circuit in a fully finished basement. There may be additional codes based on your local municipality and building department. A licensed electrician in your area will be familiar with the requirements and can ensure your home is up to code.

It’s not a good idea to mix LED and incandescent Christmas lights if you can avoid it. LEDs and incandescents can have significantly different electrical current needs. This difference can lead to a higher risk of problems and failure for both light strands. When possible, switch all your lights over to one kind or the other for the best results. Do not connect the different types of light strings to each other, and avoid linking them to the same circuit.

While it’s not mandatory unless you’re purchasing a home, it is important to schedule regular home electrical inspections for safety and to maintain your house’s value. Inspections can reduce fire risk and can help save money on insurance premiums. They can also catch problems before they start, saving money on repairs down the line.

People who have experienced blown fuse have occasionally tried to fix the problem by placing copper pennies in the fuse box. While they are good conductors of electricity and can seemingly “fix” the issue,  they don’t protect against short circuits or fires. Putting pennies in a fuse box is dangerous—the best solution is to call a professional electrician to fix the problem.
