Unplug the AC unit or turn off the breaker to the unit in your circuit breaker box.
Remove the faceplate.
Spray a vacuum hose attachment or compressed air can to remove debris, dust, dirt, and grime.

Use the vacuum hose to suck up any extra debris.
Take a coil-safe cleaning solution and spray it onto the coils. Try to choose a no-rinse solution.

Not if you have a standard unit. Because portable AC units actually work to dehumidify the room, you’ll likely need to drain the unit from time to time—but you won’t have to put water into it. Don’t run your AC with a wet filter. It can cause your AC to work too hard, which will run up your utility bill and cause extra wear and tear on the system. You could also spread moisture and mold throughout your house. Turn off the AC, remove the wet filter, and check for cracks or clogs. Fix the problem (with a pro’s help, if you need it), and put a dry filter in place before you turn the system back on.
