"Great response from initial call to completion of work. Plumber was knowledgeable and corrected a drain pipe issue. He needed a connection part and rather than come back the next day, he went to a local plumbing supply house and came back the same day so that we had our faucet working. Cost a bit more than we expected because our disposal was old and a connection part was missing and part was unavailable so we had to get a new disposal installed and this increased our cost by almost 200. Nevertheless the responsiveness and professionalism and work completion in a thorough and timely manner was important so we will hire again"

Small jobs welcome

"Matthew was willing to fit me into a busy schedule as I had a toilet leaking from the waterline connection. My second toilet also had problems. I called 4 other plumbers and only Matthew actually answered his phone, and I never heard back from the others. Matthew is courteous, friendly, and gets the job done in a timely manner, Nice work, no mess left behind. Highly recommended."

"Richard arrived on time, fully prepared to undertake the periodic servicing of our tankless water heater. He explained everything he was going to do and why it was necessary. He also explained the necessity of checking all drains, toilets, and plumbing fixtures throughout the house. When he was finished, I felt confident that our entire plumbing system had been examined -- for the first time in 20 years! He is a licensed plumber, which not all "plumbers" in North Carolina are."

"Rich did an outstanding job. He came to my rescue when I needed 2 outdated outside faucets changed because they always leaked. He recommended 3 different types an explained each one to me in detail, this helped me make the choice that met my needs. He also noticed improper and leaking plumbing under one of my sinks and made the necessary repairs. He also discovered the humidity line from the central A/C was leaking and explained what this did for me and again this allowed me to make the decision to have him fix it and temporarily cap it off with the ability to use it in the future if I needed to. Rich is prior Navy and I am retired Coast Guard. Our experiences in the service have instilled a sense of "attention to detail", Richard is spot on with this as shown in his craftmanship. With over 25 years of experience he is definitely my "go to guy" when it comes to any type of plumbing...excellent job!!!"

Affordable Plumbers questions, answered by experts

There’s no way around it—a burst pipe is often a homeowner’s worst nightmare, and the situation can range from semi-serious to dire. If you don’t catch the leak, it can lead to thousands of dollars worth of water damage.

At best, you’ll notice a burst pipe quickly, turn off your water supply, and use a wet vacuum to clean up minor flooding. A plumber can repair the pipe, and you won’t be left with a major bill. At worst, severe water damage can collapse floors, ceilings, walls, and foundations, sometimes leading to major repairs and renovations.

Most gas stoves either have a shutoff valve inside the oven drawer compartment or behind the stove wall. Cooktop shutoff valves are usually inside the base cabinet, and wall ovens usually have a shutoff valve in the cabinet below or next to the unit. Construction regulations require installing a shutoff valve within six feet of the appliance. So, if you can’t find the valve on the appliance, look around the connecting gas pipes within the six-foot radius.

Whether an earthquake gas shut-off valve is required depends on your location and circumstances. Certain cities, states, and even insurance providers mandate them, especially in areas with high seismic activity. In California, for example, while laws vary by county, most jurisdictions require a valve to be installed in newly constructed homes or when a home is sold or renovated. The Los Angeles Municipal Code specifically requires a licensed contractor for installation. Even if not required by law, installing a seismic shut-off valve is a wise safety measure. These devices automatically cut off the flow of gas during an earthquake, which can prevent gas leaks, fires, and explosions. It is recommended to check with your local building department for specific laws regarding installation, permitting, and inspections, and to ensure the valve you install is on your city's list of approved models.

If you’ve accessed the bolts and nuts that hold your toilet seat in place and can’t unscrew them, it’s possible that they were overtightened or that the material corroded over time, making it impossible to unscrew. If that’s the case, you can either call in a plumber for help, or you can DIY a solution if you’re careful. Lay down masking tape around the mounting bracket and then use the tape as a surface to lay a hack saw blade. Move slowly to cut through the bracket and bolt, being careful not to damage the porcelain in the process.

Running hot water through frozen pipes can help thaw them, but it's not always a guaranteed solution. To prevent pipes from freezing in the first place, it’s crucial to open the hot and cold faucets connected to the frozen pipes and allow a slow, steady stream of water to flow. Additionally, applying gentle heat using a hairdryer or heat tape can expedite the thawing process. If the pipes remain frozen, professional assistance may be necessary to prevent damage.
