"We had a great experience from start to finish. Marc was an excellent sales associate. He was very professional & knowledgeable of the products West Shore Home offered & how he could make this work for us. On the day of installation Kelvin & Keelan arrived on time arrived on time & got right to work. They arrived at 9:15 am & was completely finished by 5:45 pm. We had lots of water damage to our floor underneath the old shower. The floor had to be completely ripped out & rebuilt. We also needed new plumbing. When it was all said done these 2 guys left us with a beautiful new walk-in shower."

Plumbing questions, answered by experts

Brown stains in your toilet bowl are most likely limescale. Limescale happens from lime being left behind from hard water evaporating. Once dried out, the minerals also catch dirt and bacteria which eventually accumulate into the brown or blackish stain you see in your toilet. To remove thick and hard limescale from your toilet, use a mixture of vinegar, lemon juice, and baking soda, and scrub with a metal scrubbing brush.

Yes, frozen pipes can prevent a toilet from working correctly. If the pipes are frozen, water cannot flow, which means your toilet tank won't be able to refill after a flush. This will prevent the toilet from flushing again. Depending on which lines are frozen, the ice can also block the drain pipe, preventing water from flushing away.

As a temporary workaround, you can manually add water to the tank for each flush. To clear a frozen drain pipe, you can try filling the toilet bowl or tank with warm water and flushing to help thaw the ice. However, the best long-term solution is to unfreeze the pipes to get your toilet back in working order.

While replacing an outdoor spigot is a fairly straightforward job that often takes less than an hour, it’s not a DIY-friendly task—even if you have basic plumbing experience. Depending on your home’s plumbing setup, you may need to access pipes in your walls or underneath your home. Plus, if you have copper pipes, you might have to solder them. For all of these reasons, we recommend hiring a knowledgeable local plumber to replace a hose bib.

Pipes tend to burst once frozen for 24 to 72 hours. It takes temperatures 20 degrees Fahrenheit or colder for several days to freeze and burst pipes, rather than a day or two with temperatures hovering around freezing. When temperatures are dropping, it’s time to drip faucets and open cupboard doors that house pipes to circulate heated air.

The most common types of backflow preventer devices depend on the purpose of the installation. For example, Portland.gov states that the double-check valve assembly and the pressure vacuum breaker assembly are most commonly used in irrigation systems, while the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) states that double-check valve assembly and the reduced pressure zone assembly backflow preventers are best for fire protection systems.

Ask a plumber for recommendations on the best backflow preventer device for your home.
