"Ben Granning was such gentleman to deal with and his entire company was friendly, hardworking and professional. They built a beautiful retaining wall that far exceeded my expectations. I would highly recommend B.H. Graning to anyone and in fact have already referred them to my homeowners association president for future work."

"CJ was the absolute best!!! I have a small fenced yard that needed attention and outlying unfenced areas. The crew came late in the day (perfect as the grass was wet through most of the day) and got the project completed in less than 40 minutes. CJ was honest and knowledgeable. When I asked about pet friendly insecticide treatment to the property he suggested we wait until the weather warms up for best effect. Definitely would recommend. Be sure to roll up any rugs before they start your project. Remind them to shut the gate, if you have one."

"We are so pleased with the work that was done. We had a failing, ill-constructed concrete retaining wall. They removed it, cleaned up the debris and seeded/covered the area. When we asked to them to create a wooden guard rail, they were very accommodating. We plan on having the help us with future projects."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

A trench that is less than 5 feet deep often doesn't require a protective system. Most residential trenches will not go this deep (the typical residential drainage trench is just 18 inches deep). In the event that an excavator needs to dig more than 5 feet beneath the surface, a protective system is required unless the excavation is in entirely stable rock.

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

Trenching is a specific kind of digging. Trenching means digging a depression in the earth that’s deeper than it is wide, often with heavy machinery. Digging refers to any kind of removal of earth in order to create a human-made depression, hole, or cut in the earth’s surface. You can dig with big tools or even with just a hand shovel.

Yes, most services include site leveling and foundation work. Confirm with your contractor for specifics.

The rules for trenching and excavation include setting up and following safety protocols, learning how to use tools and machines properly, and ensuring there is a safe exit for all workers. Keep heavy equipment and materials away from the edge of the hole or trench. Call the 811 dig line before starting any excavation or trenching project to ensure you don’t hit any electrical or gas lines.
