"This company aims to please. We were so impressed with how they presented themselves and in explaining what was going to be done and the time frame it was expected to be completed. The work required was a total remodel of an older home. The owner offered suggestions and recommendations with allowing us to choose. We selected a paint color that was not what we expected and he repainted the walls at no extra charge. Excellent customer service. Just courteous and professional at all times."

"Went to my Cottage and sent me a estimate. Was told to call them when I m at my Cottage. They said they would be their Monday afternoon, the called and said they got done with other job early. Can they come now. They came early , and repaired railing. Also needed brace under stairs, they had extra wood and repaired for free. Hope to always use them and would recommend as great. "Nice company to work with. Debbie Broadbent is a hands on business person. Too frequently a contractor you hire to do repairs/paint etc on your home turns the job over to a third party as soon as you hire them and you never see that person you hired again until it's time to pay. Debbie was attentive and available through out the project. Platinum painted my 10 year old, 3 story house constructed of Hardee Plank. Upon completion it looked brand new, now one year later it still looks brand new."

"Augustine, Greg, CJ, and crew were phenomenal! They made sure to explain next steps and offer walk through as after every step of the project. They were very efficient and respectful of our property. The clean up was also fantastic- other than the expected debris there was no sign they were drilling holes, cutting pipes, or pouring concrete! I will 100% recommend JES to anyone needing foundation repair. Our worries were gone and our problems were fixed in a day and a half. Thank you!"

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

Generally, a railroad tie retaining wall consisting of a single line of ties should be between 3 and 4 feet tall—and the height often tops out at around 6 feet. You can go taller, but you may need additional footings and reinforcements, including a second layer of railroad ties to support the added weight of the soil it’s holding back.

Each design is different, so we can’t say definitively if you’ll need a dedicated drainage system in place for a two-foot retaining wall. However, you can likely skip the drainage, as this project is typically served for walls that are 4 feet tall or more. Even with a relatively low wall, consider drainage if you are building on top of clay or poor-draining soil types or if there are buried water sources nearby, like a well used for other outdoor garden projects.

Most railroad tie retaining walls have a life span of 20 to 30 years, though you may need to replace your wall sooner if it’s repeatedly exposed to heavy rain, runoff, and excess moisture. Railroad ties are typically treated with creosote, which makes them much more durable than untreated wood. Though they last longer, they don’t last forever. For the most longevity, make sure your retaining wall has a sturdy base and steel reinforcements. You should also install drainage to direct water away from the wall.

Failure to compact the soil during construction is the most common cause of leaning retaining walls. In addition, poor drainage can lead to excessive water pressure behind a retaining wall, pushing against it until it begins to move forward away from the soil it is holding back.

With foundation walls, the slab on grade and force at the top of the wall is resisted by flooring. With retaining walls, the force at the top of the wall is not resisted.
