We are a family owned, residential design/build landscaping firm that has been serving the triangle since 1981.
"Our backyard had a large uphill slope, rendering most of it unusable. Additionally, there were drainage problems and a lack of privacy. All of these prevented us from enjoying our yard. Gardens of the Carolinas was the most responsive when we initiated initial inquiries, which continued throughout our project. John and his team were fantastic to work with for our backyard project. The team listened to our concerns and provided an extensive long-term vision for rectifying them and making them an area we’d enjoy moving forward. Based on our immediate needs, we decided to take a phased approach by adding a timber retention wall, a stone wall with lighting, and privacy trees. They also tapped into our existing drainage solution and made it more efficient. I view this as providing us with a canvas for future projects. We are very pleased with their work and will be a repeat customer for future phases of their initial plan. To summarize our experience with Gardens of the Carolinas: Patience: We made multiple edits to find a solution within budget. John and the team always understood and respected our concerns, ensuring we were comfortable with the decisions. Thoroughness: I was provided multiple options and pros/cons for every question. This reiterated their experience and gave me confidence that we were making a sound investment. Seamless: their team handled everything for us, including permitting, assistance with HOA, and more, in addition to the work completed. Professionalism: The crew performing the work respected concerns around noise and ensured a clean and tidy work environment. When the project was completed, they ensured the streets, sidewalks, and backyard were all in a great place, demonstrating their unwavering dedication to customer service."

"I hired Miguel to build a patio in my backyard, and it turned out to be one of the worst decisions I’ve ever made. We agreed on a 30x14 paver design for $5,700, including all labor and materials. However, Miguel showed up with only 40 pavers anyone with common sense knows that’s nowhere near enough for a space that size. Because of his poor planning (or intentional deceit), I had to pay for an additional 40 pavers and agree to a last-minute change in design just to get the job done. In total, I ended up paying over $7,900 more than $2,000 over our original agreement and I still didn’t get the design we agreed upon. He also purchased rocks in colors we never discussed, which clashed with everything and forced me to spend even more money. His so called retainer wall was so poorly constructed that I had to hire a second contractor to fix it, costing me an additional $2,000. The final product? Mismatched, two toned pavers, rushed work, and shoddy craftsmanship. On top of that, Miguel had the audacity to charge me extra because his workers had to put in more hours all due to his own lack of preparation and failure to follow our agreement. His lack of professionalism, accountability, and honesty is appalling. I wouldn’t trust this man to build a sandcastle. What I’ve learned from this mess: never pay a contractor without getting an itemized list, double check the materials yourself, and don’t assume people will be honest just because they seem nice. If I had the time and energy, I’d take him to court. But truthfully, I believe karma will handle it because there’s no way good will come to someone who operates this deceitfully. Save yourself the money and stress — do not hire Miguel"

"I did not see all the work this company did for me since I’m handicapped. I had people here who escorted to the area shortly after the work was done. we were all so disappointed with the new garden area i asked for. I wanted A tree stump removed, mulched and edged. It has about an 1” OF MULCH, the stump was mostly removed but covered with weed mat and mulch. I had bushes removed from one area and moved to this area which have all died. Two new butterfly bushes were included which one is dead. The large area was not edged. They put down weed mat and covered with 1” of mulch leaving edges ragged and unappealing. I called the number on the business card and asked for the manager and a returned call by the project manager was made. I asked for the owner so i could show him the work that was done. The project manager insisted he come and make it right. I have not seen him since and that was a week ago. No phone calls to me were made. I cannot find the owners phone number on any of this companies web sites. I am so disappointed with the work, especially in this garden area. I paid a lot of extra money for mulch materials which i feel i was shorted a lot and he left with mulch in the truck!"

"Attributes - Promptness, Pricing, Quality work and highly personal. I hired Eric for a driveway culvert extension. He called me the day of my request and was at my house a couple days later to work up the quote. His quote was reasonable and he let us know he would be able to do the job within a week. It is quite rare these days to have anyone in the service industry do anything in a timely manner. Eric had the job completed within 10 days of our initial conversation. Very impressive!! His job was thorough and quite impressive. I recommend him to anyone that is interested in landscaping service in the Roanoke Valley area."

"In October of 2024 Shane came out to give me a quote for yard clean up. After several calls by me, I finally got a start date. Shane called me and said they could start a day early and I was fine with that but they showed up at 5:30pm. I was told they would start at noon. The next day (actual start date) they showed up at 7:30pm and were there for a half hour and left because getting dark. I was told they would be there the next day at 9am. At 10:30am I called Shane asking where the crew was. He actually argued with me telling me they were there. So apparently I was blind. They showed up after 11am and they finished while I was out. Only half the job was done. I emailed all photos of areas not done with pic of contract for those areas quoted. In no way did Shane reach out to see if everything was done. I had to hire another company to finish what they did not do. When I got the bill, I reached out to Shane and said we need to revisit this bill because not everything done. He offered a $150 discount (via Sara's email) which was laughable and said "if ok we will send a new invoice". I sent an email back saying $150 is not acceptable and got no response. No response for 5 months! I got an email 5 months later saying my bill was delinquent but they cut the bill in half. I never received new invoice that showed bill was cut in half till 5 months after my last contact with them. They are not trustworthy and play games. If I could give a zero, I would."

Landscapers typically charge $25 to $50 per person per hour, which equals around $50 to $100 per hour for a two-person crew. These rates can vary depending on your location, the size of staff needed for the job, and overall job type. For example, a larger crew will be needed for structural additions and hardscaping versus planting flowers.
Landscapers typically charge $50 to $80 per person per hour, which equals around $150 to $240 per hour for a three-person crew. These rates can vary depending on your location, the size of staff needed for the job, and overall job type. For example, a larger crew will be needed for structural additions and hardscaping versus planting flowers.
When it comes to landscapers, licensing laws vary. Landscaping architects are required to be licensed in all 50 states, whereas traditional landscaping contractors are not typically required to hold a certification. You’ll likely be working with a landscaping contractor for most residential projects. If you are redesigning your whole yard or adding in hardscape features, you will work with a landscaping architect at some point during the project. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local landscaper guidelines.
Licensing requirements vary from state to state and by locality. It's always best to check with your local University Extension Service to find out which services require licensing.
If you want landscaping done but want to save some money on the overall fees, you can do a few things at every stage. Some ways to save money on your landscaping include:
Repurpose existing features and materials
Softscape instead of hardscape
Choose the more inexpensive materials
DIY when you can
Buy young plants instead of mature ones
Saving money on a landscape project starts by breaking the project up in segments or phases. Start with the site work, digging or adding soils. Then plant the larger "anchor" plantings. Then follow up with the smaller fill in shrubs or flowers. Lastly, add decorative items like boulders, rock mulch and low voltage landscape lighting. This way you can budget the project based on your time and money.
If you are an avid DIYer and have plenty of time to dedicate to your yard, doing your own landscaping (or at least some of it) can be an affordable option. Projects like planting a tree, planting grass, laying sod, or building a firepit can realistically be done without the need for a landscaping professional. However, these projects can take considerable time and some landscaping knowledge, so having a pro might save you in the long run.
Projects that are dangerous, like digging with heavy machinery or removing a tree, should always be done by a professional.
Yes, landscaping and lawn care can be done by anyone. Just like baking, anyone can do it, but are the results good and worth the effort? Hiring a professional makes sense when doing complex work such as drainage, treating insects and disease, and pruning trees over 20 feet tall, etc. Some of these things require special licensing, such as pruning large trees. Getting multiple estimates from well-regarded professionals can help you decide the best choices for a DIY project or hiring a professional.
Landscaping costs around $3,500 but varies widely from $200 to $14,000. Factors that play a part in your final landscaping price tag include:
Location
Yard size
Project size
Materials
Land preparation
Type of landscaping
Considering so many factors, it’s not surprising that the overall costs can differ. A typical landscaping project is flower bed installation, which averages between $800 and $3,000. However, landscape lighting installation is a higher-end project, with a price tag of $2,000 to $6,000.
