"Great company and team to work with. We requested a retaining wall for the front of our home, metal edging for the sides and back, some intensive weeding/mulching, and some concrete pavers to install in one section. It was a complex job, but the Soto team was very well priced. More importantly, they are incredibly honest. Rigo reached out early and let me know we could save a huge amount of money if we ordered the pavers and river rock on our own, since the company would order in bulk quantities larger than we'd actually need. Then, when it was time to install they brought a huge team in and finished the entire process within a day and a half. The whole team was kind and patient with me (I know very little about landscaping) and it was a very comfortable process. Multiple neighbors have already reached out impressed with the quality of work! They fully deserve a 5 star and I'll be sure to call them for future landscaping needs too."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

A half inch above ground level is ideal for metal edging. This provides enough depth for the edging to hold in place and enough height to keep in most landscaping materials (like mulch or gravel). If you install edging too high off the ground, it will stand out from your landscaping and pose a tripping risk. If you install it too low, your ground cover won’t stay in place.

While you can leave roots in the ground, if you don’t want the shrub to regrow again over time, it’s best not to leave any roots behind. Ensure you remove as much of the shrub as possible, including the root ball and any main roots you can see, to prevent new growth. Some gardeners opt for using a chemical treatment to prevent the stump from growing back, but this can kill beneficial microorganisms living in your soil.

Yes, you can hydroseed with a garden hose, but you’ll need a tank or other large vessel for mixing the slurry, then a pump to send the slurry through the hose for spraying. Making your own hydroseeding unit can work, but it’s not usually worth the effort and supplies unless you already have them.

While both fall and spring are suitable times of the year for planting trees, fall is typically the better option. Soil stays warm long enough to allow tree roots to establish in fall before they go dormant, while spring might give way to intense summer heat before spring-planted trees have time to grow strong roots.

Surface-level tree roots might only pose a small threat, such as being a tripping hazard or obstacle when you mow your lawn. But if mature tree roots start growing in the direction of your home’s foundation or plumbing system, it could be a real problem. Cutting small tree roots out before they grow too large can keep your home safe without removing the whole tree.
