"Installed sump pump. Didn’t press for the more expensive, expansive project. I appreciated that. I also loved that they communicated and set times and dates and confirmed. So far so good. We will see if problem is resolved."

"I highly recommend Todd and SWS. My crawlspace needed so much work and Todd helped me understand all the options and stayed within my budget. SWS installed drain piped the length of the house, dug a basin with a sump pump, dehumidifier and laid a vapor barrier. What meant the most to me was Todd explaining the solutions, showing me the areas to be addressed and coming back out after his team was done to inspect their work (which was impeccable). I so relieved to have this project behind me."

"High integrity company and excellent customer service. We had humidity issues with our crawlspace and were impressed with the treatment plan provided by Lance among others we looked at. We were impressed with the installation and solution. Kevin (the owner) came out to inspect the work of his installers and even repaired a vent that was not their responsibility - impressive customer service and work. We would highly recommend them."

"We have used Mike and his crew several times for numerous properties. They are EXTREMELY knowledgeable and efficient. They can see what the issue is and provide a clear plan to fix it! HIGHLY recommend them for any basement, crawlspace and/or drainage issues! Would give them 10++ stars if I could."

"Danny, Jody and the entire Parks Waterproofing of NW NC did a fantastic job from the very beginning during the project assessment phase till the very last phase of the scope was completed. Our project involved a structural and waterproofing repair to the masonry foundation wall that resulted from hydrostatic pressure exerted from the exterior of the wall due to very poor water drainage and inadequate foundation waterproofing. Danny and his team provided a permanent turn key solution that has proven to be effective. The result, additional square footage that was previously unusable that now has more living area and increased the overall value of the home. There are other systems out there that provide a solution for allowing water to weep through the foundation walls and drain from the interior. This type of repair does nothing to resolve the real issue at hand. If you want a permanent repair that you can count on for the life of your home, look no further. I highly recommend the Parks Waterproofing of NW NC team."

Sump Pump Installation questions, answered by experts

One common reason a sump pump stops working is improper sizing. Different locations need different sizes and power ratings of sump pumps depending on the typical amount of water the pump needs to manage. If your sump pump is too small for the quantity of water, it can overwork and either burn out or reduce the life of the unit. If the pump is too big, it can overwork and burn out early.

A sump pump can be plugged into a regular, 110-volt outlet with three-prong openings, but it must have GFCI protections per the NEC, meaning you’ll need a GFCI outlet and circuit. Sump pumps require two outlet openings, one for the plug to the motor and one for the float switch.

A sewage ejector pump is necessary if you have any plumbing fixtures, such as a bathroom, laundry room, or sink, located below the level of your home's main sewer line. Standard plumbing relies on gravity to move wastewater and solid waste to the municipal sewer or septic tank. However, for fixtures located below grade (e.g., in a basement), gravity is not sufficient.

The purpose of a sewage ejector pump is to actively pump this wastewater and solid waste upward into the main sewer line. Without an ejector pump in this situation, wastewater would have no way to exit and would eventually back up, causing a sewage overflow or flooding in your basement. If all of your home's plumbing is on the main floor or higher, gravity can handle the drainage, and an ejector pump is not needed.

Sump pump repairs are typically handled by plumbers or waterproofing specialists who are experienced in handling basement and foundation-related issues. Plumbers can address issues like clogs, electrical problems, and mechanical failures, and waterproofing professionals may be ideal if the sump pump is part of a larger drainage or waterproofing system.

Some people may also call on a general handyperson for minor sump pump repairs. However, for complex problems, hiring a certified plumber or waterproofing expert ensures the work is done correctly and prevents further issues.

A sump pump's lifespan is typically 7 to 10 years, though the general range can be anywhere from 5 to 15 years. The specific type of pump is a major factor: pedestal sump pumps last an average of 20 to 25 years, whereas submersible sump pumps last between 5 and 15 years. While pedestal pumps are less expensive to service, they are also louder and more prone to clogging.

Several other factors influence longevity, including the pump's quality, usage frequency, and maintenance schedule. A high-quality pump that is well-maintained in a dry climate may last for two decades, while a lower-quality, poorly maintained pump in an area with a high water table or frequent flooding may fail in six years or less.

Regular maintenance, including annual inspections and tuneups from a professional, can significantly extend the pump's life. It is time to consider a replacement if your sump pump runs constantly, cycles frequently, shows visible rust or corrosion, or trips a circuit breaker. As a preventative measure, many homeowners replace their pumps every eight years. It's also worth noting that a manufacturer's warranty can indicate expected lifespan, and some home insurance policies may not cover water damage from a pump that is past its recommended replacement date.
