"I had an outstanding experience with Miguel and highly recommend him for any electrical work! He arrived on time, was incredibly warm, courteous, and professional throughout the entire process. Miguel went above and beyond by securing a permit from the county, installing a transfer switch for my new generator, and even arranging for the inspector to come the same day. The installation was completed quickly, accurately, and at a great price. His attention to detail and commitment to customer satisfaction were exceptional. I will definitely hire Miguel again for any future electrical needs. Five stars!"

"Very pleased with their work. They installed a charger in my townhome garage for my new EV. I talked with John initially, and he quickly walked me through a number of issues over the phone and by text messaging in advance of their visit, to make sure that the circuit could handle the charger, and that I was ordering an appropriate charger. Tyler and Taylor did the actual installation. Everything went well. They followed up and arranged an inspection with the Town of Cary. I was able to receive the Duke Energy rebate for installing an EV because they had done everything correctly and billed clearly."

"Outstanding. First they installed a quad outlet and a z-wave switch in our new garage - did a great job for low cost. So we hired them again to install a ceiling fan outlet in my home office, which has a 15 foot ceiling. They installed the outlet before I obtained the fan, then came back a second time and installed the fan, and did not charge us extra for having to make a second trip. As a last minute add-on, they also fished an internet cable through the walls from my wife's office where the service comes in, to a wall outlet in my office, so I now have a direct connection in my office. Took care of it on the same day they did the ceiling fan. Also, they took care of all the inspections and permits. Very professional, reliable, prompt, competent, and nice to work with."

"Greg was wonderful! He inspected our outlet, determined the issue and repaired it. He also took the time to explain the units in our circuit box and the wall outlet. I felt very confident in his work and would absolutely hire him again. I am so glad we found Streamline Services on Angie’s List."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

The average cost to install a home generator is $5,200, but total costs can range from $500 to $18,000 or more. The final price depends on several factors, including the generator's size, type, brand, fuel source, and the cost of labor and assembly. The generator's size is the most significant cost factor, as units that can power larger homes with higher energy demands cost more.

Cost breakdowns by generator type are typically as follows:

  • Portable or Emergency Backup Generators (1kW–7.5kW): $500–$2,000

  • Partial-Home Generators (9kW–20kW): $2,000–$6,500

  • Whole-House Generators (22kW–48kW): $5,000–$18,000

To ensure you get the right size unit for your needs without overpaying, consider hiring an electrician to calculate the electrical load of your essential appliances. It is also recommended to get at least three quotes from qualified installers to find the best fit for your budget.

In many cases, yes. There are models called dual-fuel generators and fuel switches, but only between certain types of fuel. For example, with the right setup you can convert a generator from natural gas to propane. Some allow switching between diesel and gasoline. There are even tri-fuel generators available in some cases, which adds a large layer of security if you are worried about fuel availability in times of crisis. Always check your generator capabilities and manual instructions before trying to switch fuels. Some generators can use another fuel but may need a fuel conversion kit to prep them first.

A portable generator can supply power to selected appliances and circuits in a home, but it's generally not designed to handle the entire household's electrical needs simultaneously. Portable generators have limited wattage capacity, so they are only designed to power essential devices and electronics temporarily until local power is restored. If your power needs outweigh the capabilities of a portable generator, consider installing a whole-home generator instead.

Yes, in most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home models. Because these installations involve significant alterations to your home's electrical system and produce exhaust fumes, local governments often require a permit or inspection for safety purposes. A generator permit typically costs between $50 and $250, depending on your location. Your electrician or certified installer can usually handle the permitting process for you, but you will be responsible for the cost. It's a good practice to confirm with your installer that they will pull all necessary permits before work begins.

While natural gas generators are costly, they’re a great option for standby power due to the reliability of natural gas as a fuel source. Unlike other fuels, natural gas is delivered through underground pipes, making outages extremely rare and less likely to be affected by the elements. As long as the area isn’t prone to earthquakes, they offer an unlimited supply of natural gas that doesn’t degrade over time or require storage in tanks.
