"Joe and his crew started out by repairing my kitchen drywall. A previous so called "handy man" made a mess, and we had to start over. The work his crew did was so good, I asked if he could go ahead and do the tile work for the back-splash on the wall. Not only did they show up on time, but they made sure that they covered up everything with plastic to ensure that the house would not get dusty from the work being done. They even took off their shoes to keep from tracking in dust. The back-splash turned out just great along with the drywall that he repaired on the ceiling in the living room. He's my "go to" man for anything we may need in the future. From drywall, tile work, etc. I'm sure he can do it on time and within the cost quoted. Use my name for any reference, he's the best."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Regular dusting, occasional repainting, and avoiding harsh scrubbing preserve the finish.

If you’re installing new drywall, you may need to skim coat the drywall first for a smooth finish and to allow the primer to adhere to the wall. It’s only necessary if there are imperfections in your drywall due to issues with the studs or improper drywall installation. If you’re refreshing existing walls, you may want to skim coat if there are imperfections across the wall. As an alternative, you can repair your drywall and sand it for a smooth finish before painting.

Drywall can get wet and dry out without sustaining permanent damage, but only if the water damage is minor. If you have a small leak and are quick to correct the issue and set up blower fans and dehumidifiers, your drywall should dry out. If the leak is persistent, the drywall becomes totally waterlogged, or mold begins forming on the drywall, you should remove and replace it.

While it’s most common to sand plaster dry, it is possible to wet-sand plaster, too. Doing so can reduce the amount of plaster dust released into the air and make it easier to work in smaller, more delicate areas (such as around wall trim). However, some people find that wet sanding leads to more imperfections, which is why larger walls are more often dry sanded to ensure an even finish.

You should stagger drywall sheets to help prevent cracking. The joints between drywall sheets are the weak spots, so if you install drywall with seams aligned, you’ll create weak lines that run across the length of the wall and extend from floor to ceiling. But when you stagger drywall, the solid sections of panels will support the joints. This can prevent seams from cracking or separating due to fluctuating temperature and humidity, vibrations from movement inside the home, and gravity.
