The best ways to protect floors when painting depend in part on the type of paint you’re using.  When you’re using latex paint, most people will choose a drop cloth consisting of canvas, plastic, or heavy paper to protect the floor. No, you cannot paint over soot. Soot is a type of contaminant and if not properly removed can cause further damage to your paint and walls. Adding paint directly over soot can result in your paint color changing in appearance and potentially peeling over time. 

If you skip using a primer before painting brick, you risk ending up with a blotchy paint job that won’t last as long. Because of the natural variations in brick, paint can adhere and dry unevenly to different spots. When you use a primer, you put a neutralizing layer between the brick and the paint, evening the texture and color. Without a good primer, paint can also flake off in spots, come out blotchy, and wear away more easily.

A whole-house color palette often has between five and seven colors. Those include the trim color that appears throughout your home, a foundation color for your main living areas, secondary colors for each bedroom, and accent colors, which are close to your foundation or secondary colors.
