"Quackers was the 2nd vendor to review the problem. The first vendor proposed a much more expensive solution. Quacker's saw that I did not have a sump pump in my sump pit so they proposed that this be the first step to fix the problem which so far is working. He also advised me to run new drainage tile away from foundation near where the water entered the basement."

"I wish I didn’t have to keep writing reviews for this company, because that means my house had yet another problem! But if I have to, this is the company I want to give 5 stars to. Mike and his crew haven’t let me down yet through the multiple problems with my house. This time a settling inner foundation corner required a 52’5” pier! Yikes! And they piered the porch too. They came prepared with covers for my wood stairs, a machine to blow the cement dust out my basement window, and more. Very professional the whole time, they answered any of my somewhat nervous questions. They neatly cemented up the hole, and cleaned up after themselves completely. Would I use them again? Let’s hope I don’t have to, but if I do, then it’s a resounding yes!"

"I had 4 different water proffing companys come to my house. Brad from Roberts was the second company. My husband was at work. Brad talked to me like I had a brain. He showed me on paper what would be done. He looked at my walls and told me I did not have any damage like walls pushing in. He gave me an estamate of how much it would cost. I called him back and ask if he could come back and explain some things to my husband. He came back. After talking to my husband we had decited to have Roberts do the work. My husband called Brad and he gave us a start date. The day for the work to start 3 truck came to my house. They were right on time. They came to my door and ask if they could back in my driveway. I told them yes it is big we  use to have a tractor trailer. Chad took me into the basement and walked me throw what was going to be done. The first thing the workers did was put things on my floor and covered the opening in my kitchen so no dust would come into my house. They got right to work. I heard the the jack hammers. They worked all day and took 20 minutes for lunch. When they left the first night they came and told me. My husband and I went into the basement and the floor around the walls had been jack hammered rock placed in the hole, pipe placed on the rock then more rock on top of the pipe. My husband wanted to do some plumbing so he had them jack hammer the floor in our shower room. Oh Yes the other 3 companys told us WE would have to tear our shower room out so they could Jack Hammer the floor. Brad told us just take the toliet and sink out and leave the walls and shower!!!!! That saved us at least $1000.00!!! They tunneled  under the walls and under our shower!!! They jack hammered the floor for my husband and he did his plumbimg. Today they came back right on time. The crew came in and said hi and went to work. They covered my floors and opening into my kitchen again. I thought it was going to take 3 days or more. They concreted around the floor over the rock and pipe. They concreted the bathroom floor where my husband did some plumbing and installed the sump pump. I really did not want a sump pump but did want a dry basement. They cleaned up and cleaned my floor. Mark came and got me. It was only 1:30. I thought he needed something. He said he wanted me to look. We went down stairs. Oh My Gosh!! It was done!! It looks like someone used a machine to smooth out the concrete. My floor was so clean. There was not rocks or concrete left on my floor. Mark poured a bucket of water in the sump pump to show me how it worked. I did not hear a motor running. This is going to be great!!! He showed me where he took the pipe out side where my husband wanted it. I told Mark my husband would take care of that but he said no that was his job and that is what he does. My husband is going to love that. He went over the warranty with me and I signed the papers. All of the workers were so nice. I never heard a bad word spoke and when they spoke to me they were all so nice.
Roberts was not the cheapest waterproofing company but they saved me so much work and money by tunneling under my shower and walls that to me they were the cheapest!!! There work was unbelieveable. They were on time and what nice people work for Roberts. I will use them again if I ever have a need and will tell all of my family and friends to use them.

"Really great experience with Perma Jack all the way through for an external sump pump installation. Rich came out originally to assess and plan and was much more thorough than other bids. Price was reasonable too compared to others. After scheduling, Marcus and Sam came out on time and got started working and finished well ahead of what I was expecting. They were quick and thorough and left the place looking better than it looked before. Sump pump is well positioned and inconspicuous and I am very pleased with how it looks and performs. 10/10 experience"

"I saw them in the neighborhood, so I got their details and they gave me an estimate. They were re-repairing a crack from 20 years ago. They did their work and cleaned up afterward. I waited until after 3 or 4 serious rain storms before this comment. The basement still dry. No seepage through the cracks. I should have called them a long time ago."

"Gary Kimberlin's team did a great job for us with a series of small projects which were too big for a handyman, but apparently too small for most contractors. Most of the general contractors we contacted through Angie's List never never got back to us, but Gary treated us as valued customers from the start. Gary himself contacted us to provide a bid, and his responsiveness was exceptional. He spent about an hour with us taking measurements and discussing what we wanted to accomplish. Maybe we could have found a cheaper bid out there somewhere, but we were pleased with the punctuality and quality of the work, so I don't regret a cent that we spent. We had a series of small tasks which Gary's team performed over a couple of days. They arrived and departed when they said they would. First, they installed roll insulation in the crawl space under our living room. Rather than stapling the insulation in place, they recommended a slightly more expensive hanging system which allows the insulation to be removed and then put back without damaging it. Since additional remodeling is always a possibility, we appreciated the foresight on this issue. Second, we had planned to install a skylight in the living room, but Gary suggested can lighting instead, and I'm glad he did. Any time you punch a hole in the roof, it could leak, no matter how well you seal the edges. Can lighting was less expensive and created no possibility of leaks. We weren't happy with the first set of can lights Gary's team installed. Without complaint, Gary's team uninstalled them and replaced them with lights that we could swivel to highlight our artwork on the wall. We appreciated the team's flexibility and good attitude about the change. Third, the most complex portion of the job was repairing a wall and floor that had been damaged with pet urine. Gary's team removed the damaged baseboard, cut away the damaged carpet and pad, repainted the wall, and installed a new baseboard. This left a hole in the carpet which we covered with a throw rug, which was the solution of our choice. The repairs to the wall are seamless -- you'd never know the work had been done. Gary didn't press us to replace the whole carpet, which we weren't ready to do because our beloved older pet was still with us. The solution worked -- the smell is gone, and we didn't spend more than we wanted to. We'll complete that remodel another day. Last but not least, Gary's team did a thorough job cleaning and repairing the gutters. Small sections of guttering had come loose, which they refastened to the roofline. The one part of the remodel that didn't go as I had hoped pertained to a roofing issue. We had a gap in the soffit panels under the eaves. We had been concerned that a squirrel could climb through the hole and nest under the roof. Gary's team assessed the roofline and said that the hole in the soffit didn't communicate through to the attic, as far as they could tell, so the squirrels couldn't use it as a gateway. Unfortunately, that conclusion turned out to be incorrect. Six months later, we had to pay a wildlife control company to get squirrels out of our attic. The animal control team determined that the entry point was the hole in the soffit and installed a sheet metal cover for it. While the squirrel removal and roof repair were expensive, I don't fault Gary's team for mis-diagnosing the issue. Two other contractors/handymen had previously looked at the same problem and reached the same conclusion as Gary did, so obviously it was tricky. (We had had squirrels under the roof in a previous home, so I was concerned about this issue.) We look forward to work with Gary Kimberlin Construction again on a future remodel."

Customers say: True professional

"Marlon Tuckpointing did a professional and seamless job on my chimney. I had missing mortar, discoloration, and a cracked and worn down chimney crown. Marlon came out right away and performed an assessment, made everything clear (including the price), and stayed in contact with me during the entire process. What impresses me most is their accuracy in workmanship, including the type/color match of mortar as well as the waterproofing work that protects my home from damage. When homes are 60+ years old, it is time to start thinking about the mortar and brick that holds your home together. While durable, over time, sacrificial mortar degrades and it's time to call in a professional to maintain the look and stability of your biggest asset. I am confident that you can trust Marlon Tuckpointing to do the job and am happy to recommend them."

Basement Waterproofing questions, answered by experts

Yes, barndominiums can have basements. Barndominiums are typically built over concrete slabs, so barndo basements are not very common. However, it is possible to include a basement in a barndominium blueprint as long as you’re building completely from scratch. Barndos can have the same types of basements as traditional homes, including full or walk-out basements.

Living in a finished basement is acceptable, but only if the space has the proper points of egress and includes smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors to ensure the safety of the occupants. A good way to ensure your finished basement is suitable for use as living space is to get the basement finishing project properly permitted.

The best type of basement ventilation system depends on your budget, the moisture in your basement’s air, and the types of windows you have down there. You should consider all of these factors when choosing a ventilation system. However, the most effective method for basement ventilation is an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) or a whole-house ventilation system, which preheats or precools incoming air from the outside while also managing water vapor.

A moisture or vapor barrier helps separate the warm air inside your home from the cold air outside of it. Without it, your walls could collect condensation, mold, or other damage. Check your local building codes to see if including an interior vapor barrier is necessary for your building project or renovation, especially for rooms that are likely to be humid, like bathrooms.

A plastic vapor barrier should completely cover your basement to prevent water from penetrating through the walls. This typically goes before installing insulation to prevent moisture from building up and becoming trapped on the inside of your insulation, where it can collect and lead to mold damage. Installing insulation after the vapor barrier allows for any moisture to exit the walls for better ventilation.
