There are key differences between a butler’s pantry versus a scullery. A butler's pantry, while much larger than a traditional pantry, is still a dry area primarily used for storage. When comparing wood versus MDF, there are some widespread misconceptions that solid wood is more reliable and durable. Despite this common belief, wood isn't always a superior choice and MDF may be a better building material choice in some cases. Here are some examples:

  • MDF is more affordable than wood. You can buy MDF for as low as one-quarter of the wood price.

  • MDF is a smooth surface with no knots or woodgrain, which makes it easier to finish and cut with a saw. 

  • MDF is a standard choice for shelving and trim.

  • Unlike MDF, solid wood isn't the best option for cabinets or drawers. It can shrink, crack, or bend in response to changes in temperature and humidity, while MDF has a high moisture and fire resistance level and is less likely to break or warp.

Since melamine is a type of laminate, both types of cabinets are similar in features and benefits, but they also differ in some ways. Melamine is generally more affordable than laminate, while also being resistant to scratches, stains, and heat. However, melamine cabinets are also heavier and may easily splinter during installation. All in all, the choice between melamine and laminate cabinets will depend on your specific needs.

Maintaining painted cabinets includes regular cleaning with non-abrasive solutions and avoiding harsh chemicals that may strip paint layers.

There’s no strict rule about which way cabinet doors should open, but generally, double cabinet doors should open away from each other. With single doors, you want to avoid having them block your path or swing into  areas where people need to stand. Some kitchens are angled so that cabinet doors may crash into something no matter which way they swing, but the methods above can help prevent damage.
