Hello! My name is Derek Bascue and I have been working and developing knowledge in several handyman fields for over 15 years now. I started out being a janitor at a local daycare while still in high-school and was most recently the "Building and Grounds" technician at a local factory until they got rid of the position. I have cleaned, installed flooring from carpet to tiles, done concrete and landscaping, framed houses, wired entire homes, installed drywall, and had success as a general handyman for a couple local businesses. I'm not afraid to admit I don't know how to do something so if you have something you need done that I haven't mentioned don't hesitate to ask! "I hired Vince Anderson of Fence and Concrete Masters to redo my front deck on my house. He started work approximately March of 2024. As of today, 9/22/2025 it is still unfinished and he has not responded to my attempts at contact since October 2024. Most of it has to be redone. Which has been extremely frustrating and expensive because no one wants to finish a messed up job. All previous reviews I?ve read since then (my mistake of not researching him prior) he has rebuttals putting off everything back into his customers. He is a master at BS and reflecting blame in order to avoid responsibility for his messes. I paid the deposit of $3,500 plus an additional $2,000 part way into his mess, which was to go to materials and supplies of which I only have approximately $1,000 worth of wood materials. They would come and work a day at a time about once every 2-3 weeks. I would have to call him and then they would show up for a few hours. In October 2024 he completely stopped responding."

While it may be less expensive initially to lay concrete vs. pavers, the long-term expenses that come with repairing concrete may prove to be less cost-friendly than simply replacing a few damaged pavers. On top of that, stamped concrete may only last for 25 years compared to pavers, which can last over 50 years.

Hardscaping is usually a great investment because it makes your yard more useful and it improves your home’s curb appeal, boosting your property value. Depending on the type of hardscaping, you may not see any bump in your property taxes, either, so the downsides can be virtually non-existent. Be sure to hire a reliable hardscape contractor to get the work done professionally the first time around.

You’ll first need to install a base underneath your pavers for extra stability and drainage. Otherwise, the pavers can sink into the ground, and you’ll have to reinstall them. Use a base gravel layer of 4 to 6 inches for walkways and 10 to 12 inches for driveways. Compact your gravel layer every 2 to 4 inches so it’s nice and solid. After you install your gravel base, apply a 1-inch layer of sand on top.

While paving a driveway is possible to do as a DIY project, we don’t recommend it. Hiring a driveway professional to pave it will ensure that your driveway looks neat and clean and lasts for years to come, and it will also prevent a weak driveway and, potentially, damage to your foundation. Paving a driveway requires heavy machinery, and while you can rent the equipment needed, operating it close to your garage slab or around your home’s foundation can crack it and lead to structural issues. 

If you notice minor cosmetic problems with your driveway, you should seal it. Look out for cracks and holes on the surface, faded asphalt or concrete, and stains from oil and other chemicals. Replacing your driveway may be necessary if you’re dealing with significant problems—¼-inch cracks, large potholes, and puddles from drainage issues. The cost to install an asphalt driveway typically ranges between $4,200 and $9,000, significantly more than resealing. Consider talking to a professional to discuss whether resurfacing your driveway—a midway project between resealing and replacing—is a better option for you.
