"As part of our replacing carpet with LVP flooring, we had to reconfigure a handrail with spindles. The spindles had to be removed from the underlayment, a plate needed to be installed, and the spindles needed to be reinstalled. There was some trim work which was needed on the stairwell side of the handrail as well. The really hard part was that it had to be done with very little lead time. Aaron and Bonnie came and reviewed the project with us, talked about our options, worked up a very acceptable quote, and gave us a date for their work. The whole project took them less than a day and was done to perfection. (We were uncertain at the time as to how we would finish the wood, so that was not included in their scope of work.) Their work was precise, on time, and affordable. Watching them work together was a fun side-benefit. Good people. We would highly recommend Aaron Custom Carpentry for projects such as ours. Thank you, Aaron and Bonnie!"

Small jobs welcome

"Greg did excellent work on a bathroom remodeling project for a rental house in Grandview. He first removed damaged sheetrock, then he treated the area for mold. He replaced the damaged sheetrock with cement board and installed new tiles. In addition to the original work, he had to re-install plumbing and add new insulation. He showed great patience during the project as the tenant obstructed his work hours, making entry into the house a challenge. The finished bathroom looks great!"

"Seth is a very skilled woodworker. We needed custom trim work done and he was excellent--able to match what we already had. We are so happy with the outcome. He was very efficient --got the work done in the time frame he estimated. His rates were also very reasonable. We are now looking for other projects that we can hire him back to do for us. We highly recommend him!"

"DeckNology (Dean and Nick), which is a Father and Son business, were always eager to help plan our project or answer questions. We enjoyed working with them very much. The project was finished on time in spite pf the horrible heat we were experiencing. I would recommend Decknology for decks, pergolas, or anything else they want to build. They are talented builders with a great work ethic. They will give you the best value for your buck. You can't go wrong. We are very satisfied with their work. If we have any similar projects, they will be our first call. The pergola they built for us is "one of a kind"!"

"Mark and his crew did an awesome job in replacing a few decking boards, rails and spindles on out 20 year old deck. They also power washed and stained/sealed the entire deck. Mark is a very good man who takes pride in his work and is a great communicator. MHK will be first on my list to call for my next project."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

When building a house, it is customary to use 16d nails that measure 3 1/2 inches in length to construct the frame. These nails are crucial in providing the necessary support and stability for structural elements like joists and studs, which ensures a sturdy framework.

It is common for a contractor to ask for a down payment before starting a project, especially for jobs that require purchasing materials and equipment or hiring a crew. The deposit amount can range from 10% to 50% of the total job cost. While a request for up to 50% is not unusual, a contractor should not ask for more than that, and you should never pay for a project in full before the work has begun. To protect yourself, always discuss payment terms before starting and have a written contract that outlines the project timeline and expectations. Additionally, be sure to hire reputable contractors and check their licensing and insurance before the project begins.

Many contractors prefer checks because they’re easy to track and have no associated fees. However, many also accept credit cards (though they might add a fee to cover their processing costs).

Most contractors do not charge for meetings, but it can depend on the project, mainly if it includes detailed consultations or project planning. For general estimates, homeowners shouldn't expect to be charged. Always ask up front about meeting fees to avoid surprises and ensure you know what’s included in the process.

A contract should outline the scope of work, timelines, costs, payment schedule, and materials used for clarity and protection.
