I just moved.  Sellers had replaced all windows except in the basement.  Needed egress for basement bedroom.

Installation dates were changed but they did everything they could to get 4 windows in before new deck was installed.

There was miscommunication on the kind of windows for the downstairs rec room, which was under construction for remodel.  In that room I got 1 slider and 2 double hungs.  Not what I would have wanted if I'd understood.  It was miscommunication, but I told them it would've been helpful if they'd even drawn a picture or pointed out that there would've been two different types of windows in the same room.  We wound up constructing the room so the different windows would not be in the same room...made the storage area larger than intended, but it works.  Initially they said they'd change out the 2 double hungs.  Then they missed a couple appointments when they were to come back and install the 5th window.  At that point, I said, yes, go ahead and replace the 2 double hungs and just make it right.  They said they would but they would charge me full price.  It wasn't worth the aggravation since we

hadn't started putting walls up yet.....and were able to make it work.

Overall, this is a good deal.  I don't regret purchasing or working with them.  Ask lots of questions and make sure you completely understand the order!!  I do think they should've been willing to stand by the original offer and replace the 2 windows.  The expense on their part shouldn't have been more than labor since the windows could've been used on another project.  I would've split the labor cost with them.

One of the missed appointments on the 5th window was due to their supplier being closed Labor Day weekend.  Since I was taking time off work and trying to work around their schedule, more communication and advance notice of the delays would've been helpful.  The entire process just had a few bumps!!

Egress Windows questions, answered by experts

The proper way to install a window well is to measure the window, dig a hole deeper and wider than the window, place a drainage tube and cap, anchor the well to the foundation, caulk the seam, and backfill the hole. The job requires tools such as a hammer drill and auger and some heavy digging. Proper placement and window well installation are critical to preventing water from leaking into the window.

The cost to install a bow window can range from $1,500 to $15,000, with a national average of $3,900. The total price includes materials, which can cost between $1,200 and over $14,000, and labor, which typically adds $300 to $1,900. Several factors influence the final cost, including the window's size and frame material. For example, vinyl frames are the most budget-friendly option, while wood frames are more expensive. Custom features or energy-efficient upgrades will also increase the price. For comparison, a bay window installation typically costs between $1,000 and $7,000.

Yes, egress windows are grandfathered. However, this comes with some specifications. If you are remodeling a basement or adding a sleeping area, you’ll need to update the egress windows to be up to proper code. But, if you’re leaving your home as is, you do not have to adhere to these requirements.

Yes, you absolutely need a permit to add a window to your house. Your contractor can likely obtain this permit on your behalf. Ask about this when getting quotes from multiple window contractors.

Yes, you can install a bay window in an existing house. You’ll need to have a structural engineer draw up plans to add the necessary support to your exterior load-bearing walls and a general contractor to make the changes to the framing around the new wall opening. This will cost an average of $3,000. After that work is done, a window installer can set the new bay window in place.
