If you skip using a primer before painting brick, you risk ending up with a blotchy paint job that won’t last as long. Because of the natural variations in brick, paint can adhere and dry unevenly to different spots. When you use a primer, you put a neutralizing layer between the brick and the paint, evening the texture and color. Without a good primer, paint can also flake off in spots, come out blotchy, and wear away more easily.

You can technically just paint over hairline cracks in plaster since these cracks are often harmless, but this will mostly be a waste of paint. Paint will only hide the hairline crack for a few months before it shows up again. The best solution is to repair the crack with flexible filler or joint compound before repainting.

You can use a spray gun or a roller to apply the drywall texture and then use various blending techniques to create the desired orange peel look. Adding this texture could be a DIY job, but it also can be extremely messy, so best to leave it to a professional.
