"If you need crown molding, I wholeheartedly recommend Joel. Our kitchen has tall ceilings and tricky angles, but Joel handled it all with precision and ease. He called ahead, arrived on time, and treated the project—and us—with respect, professionalism, and kindness. Nothing fazed him. He assessed the space, gave us a clear quote, and said it would take 2–3 days. I provided the molding, and he even took it home to stain. Within the week, the job was beautifully done. The results are stunning—clean, elegant, and exactly what we hoped for. We’re already dreaming up more projects for him!"

At JP Handyman & Remodeling, we pride ourselves on providing quality service that customers can believe in. We are set up to handle all of your small repair, remodel and unique home project with a simple hourly fee of $110 per man hour. This enables us to provide you with service on smaller tasks that the large specialty companies simply can't. Call us to discuss the details of your project, get an estimated time frame that your job will require and to get a service professional out to your home today!

"We hired JP for a powder room remodel, hoping for high-quality work completed within a reasonable timeframe and a fair price. While we are aware most handymen charge hourly, we sought an estimate / range of hours; we felt this was a reasonable request for our budgeting purposes. Initially, JP confidently estimated the project to require between 40-60 hours. However, we quickly realized that we were nearing the upper end of that estimate, and our initial invoice, issued with significant work still pending, accounted for 37.5 hours (62% of the 60 hours), raising further concerns. When we raised these concerns with JP, he assured us that we were still on track to remain around the 60-hour mark. However, as the project progressed, we began noticing significant issues with the quality of the tilework. Upon discussing these concerns with JP, he acknowledged some of the imperfections but said there would be additional time and charges for correcting them, implying a trade-off between quality and efficiency. Despite clearly emphasizing our expectation for both quality work and reasonable adherence to the estimated timeframe, JP claimed we were focused on prioritizing hours and costs rather than addressing our quality concerns. This misalignment ultimately led to a disappointing outcome, prompting us to terminate the project prematurely. Despite our dissatisfaction, we paid JP $5,400 for 56.5 hours and cut our losses on an unfinished project. While Joe, the worker assigned to our project, maintained professionalism and a courteous attitude throughout, the overall experience fell short of our expectations. While we appreciate JP's attempt to communicate with us afterward, it unfortunately came too late to restore our confidence. This experience has taught us valuable lessons about ensuring alignment and fit with a contractor's approach, and we'll apply these insights to future projects."

"This is the second time we have used Dan. He built us a gym, with a sauna install. We hired him back. He is without a doubt the most reasonable and quality I have ever worked with. He does not try to talk you into things, he actually talks you out to make sure he keeps you on budget. We got everything we wanted, and he built us a bar as well. He allowed us to do a few things to save on cost. He is kind, funny, direct, but open to what you want to do. He wants you to be happy with the end product. His subs are all vetted by him and they were all top notch. My only issue, was the delays with subs, but it is 2022 and we all need patience."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

There's no simple answer to which is less costly: wood or metal-framed homes. In most cases, metal building components cost more than wooden ones, while entire metal buildings cost less than wooden versions. However, regardless of the exterior framing or structure, each must meet similar building codes. This means that the costs are about the same, even considering that wood will require more maintenance than metal over time.

In many cases, yes, you’ll need building permits for a carport. The exact laws and regulations depend on where you live, but generally speaking, you’ll need a building permit for any carport that will be permanently affixed to the ground. Premade carports sometimes don’t require planning permission or permits, but standalone and attached carports usually do. We recommend you contact your local building department to find out before beginning any carport project.

A carpenter typically does woodwork involved in constructing a home or other building, such as framing, installing sheathing, hanging kitchen cabinets, and installing trusses. These tasks are different from the focus of a woodworker, who typically does the finer interior detailed woodwork such as trim and moldings.

Yes, many kinds of building permits exist for various projects in and outside your home. Each city sets the permit categories, but they typically cover new construction, alterations, and demolition. For example, you will need a different permit to finish a basement than you would tear down the patio.

Rather than using a common two-by-four piece of wood for a rafter, you probably will use two-by-six, two-by-eight, two-by-ten, or even two-by-twelve boards. Wider lumber is typically a better choice in a larger building as it provides more sturdiness. Some installers may use wider lumber for rafters near the edges of the roof, where the greatest stress occurs, and save money with narrower lumber toward the middle.
