"We called Home Seal to consult on weatherization and insulation for our 1920s bungalow. The advice was great and we hired them to insulate the rim joists between our basement and first floor as well as adding cellulose insulation to our attic space. The communication throughout this project went well and the work was completed as scheduled. We would highly recommend Home Seal for weatherization and insulation projects."

"I was really impressed with the whole team at Guevara Insulation. They worked efficiently, the quality, and attention to detail was top notch. As a builder, and remodeler I've worked with many tradesmen over the years. So I can tell when guys really care about what they do, and it shows in their work. I had them work on my personal home build. They spray foamed all the exterior walls, and joist pockets, installed fiberglass batts, poly'd and caulked all framing seams. Then came back to finish the blow in once the drywall was up. I'll definitely be using them on my future projects, and will be recommending them to anyone needing insulation work done."

"We've had Home Pro America provide service with several projects. After this last one we agreed to share our experience in this review of their work. We had an issue with ice dams, and had Home Pro out, their recommendations for air sealing, insulation and ventilation were a little more than we were planning to spend. We had another contractor out and for the attic air sealing, they recommended all the existing insulation be removed to seal the attic. We ended up hiring Home Pro and saved more than $1,000. We've since had our roof done and gutter covers installed. We would highly recommend Home Pro America."

"I contacted HW as a possible backup contractor. Even with that understanding, Al Lien came and independently reviewed the damage and said HW would be happy to hold their position as a contingent contractor. Very impressed with their forthright attitude and professionalism. Other contractor did come through. But I am certain I will use HW in the future. Thanks Al!!"

Insulation questions, answered by experts

In some cases, yes, insulating an unheated garage can lead to mold and mildew. The issue with insulating a garage is that the interior will warm up and cool down more slowly than the exterior air, which can cause condensation inside the space. Where there is moisture, there is likely to be mold and mildew over time. Installing a vapor barrier can help avoid moisture and mildew problems in an insulated garage.

DIY insulation installation is feasible, particularly for basic rolls or batts, if you have the right protective gear and knowledge. However, hiring a professional ensures even, full coverage for maximum efficiency.

Most insulation lasts 15 to 20 years, but it really depends on the type of insulation. Spray foam is a permanent insulation material that can last up to 100 years. Fiberglass and cellulose typically settle, shift, or deteriorate around 15 years. Once your insulation reaches the 15-year mark, it's time to check it for signs of needing to be replaced.

The primary reason that insulation saves you money over time is that it reduces your energy bills by making your home more energy efficient. A crucial part of an insulation system is a properly installed vapor barrier. Local building codes dictate whether your insulation requires a vapor barrier based on the type installed. While some high-quality wool insulation may not technically need a vapor barrier, most municipalities still require one to meet code.

If you have bubble wrap lying around the house and you don’t care about the odd look, taping bubble wrap over a window is a very affordable way to insulate it. Another inexpensive option for insulating windows is to add new caulk around the glass. This step quickly cuts down on air drafts for older windows, and a tube of caulk only costs a few dollars. Adding plastic shrink film around the glass is another cost-effective option. You can purchase a kit of plastic film for a few dollars per window.
