"I called Northern first since they repaired a faucet conneciton for me last year. I received quaotes for three brands. A lter called gave me the model numbers so I could research them. I called another plumber for a quote to check prices. The prices matched for the same models. Since Northern did an excellent job previously, I engaged them. They showed up just at the end of the window they told me. Performed the replacement and clean-up in an hour. Very good work."

"Major sewer line backup while visiting my sister in Minneapolis. Had called a "rooter" service that was unable to fix the problem. They said it needed to be lined. Luckily, I discovered the Dig Free team. They came out right away, gave me a quote (which was fabulous), and was able to start right away! I was incredibly impressed and relieved. Their service and work was great and everything was cleaned up too. I would definitely recommend Dig Free to anyone!! Great job!!"

"I requested quotes from four companies ranging from $5,044 to $16,500, of which, Randy's Electric completed the work at $6,763. It was $6,156 for the upgraded panel, upgraded service and electrical work. It was $607 for the Tesla Gen3 Wall Connector install. I chose Randy's Electric over competitor as they (1) gave three realistic estimates based on transparency of materials and labor cost, (2) were responsive w/ consistent electricians, and (3) had a reasonable yet realistic cost. The low cost provider was Stafford Home Services, but I declined to use them because the individual came in the house for 15 minutes, acknowledged he wasn't electrician, but gave an estimate, which felt rushed and as though he didn't want to be there. The $16,500 quote came from ServiceToday, which felt significantly overpriced. Moreover, the lead electrician did no estimate having his apprentices wander house. They also said everything needed replacement. Randy's Electric was easy to work with by doing easy payment processing, electronic quotes/invoices, kept the house clean, kept us informed, and were very responsive. We also used Tom (lead electrician) who was consistent during each trip. He also "listened" to our asks at each step inspecting the needs himself. I ask each other service provider about a dedicated circuit to the sub pump and none of them remembered. I will continue to work with Randy's Electric as long as they continue to do a good job and provide reasonable quotes."

Affordable Plumbers questions, answered by experts

At most, polybutylene pipes last 10 to 15 years. The material is simply not durable enough to withstand some of the chemical elements found in our water supply, such as fluoride and chlorine. These pipes tend to deteriorate quickly and lead to leaks or even pipe bursts. If your home still has polybutylene pipes, we recommend replacing them as soon as possible to prevent major water damage in your home.

Yes, frozen pipes can cause a toilet to stop working correctly. If the pipes are frozen, water cannot flow, which can lead to two main problems. First, the supply line to the toilet tank may be frozen, which prevents the tank from refilling with water after you flush. Second, the drain pipe itself can freeze, blocking water from flushing away. As a temporary solution for a non-refilling tank, you can manually add water, but this is not a long-term fix. To clear a frozen drain pipe, you can try pouring warm water into the toilet bowl or tank and then flushing, as the warm water may help thaw the ice blockage. Ultimately, the best course of action is to unfreeze the affected pipes to restore your toilet to full functionality.

The toilet should rest 10, 12, or 14 inches from the back wall. As for other clearances, 15 inches is the minimum distance from the flange to any side wall or nearby fixture, including the shower, tub, and sink. Modern codes also require at least 24 inches of clear space in front of the toilet.

Boiling water helps unclog a drain, but usually only with a harder abrasive such as baking soda or vinegar. On its own, it isn’t the most effective tool. In addition, you shouldn’t use boiling water if you have PVC pipes, as it can soften or melt them. Use a plunger or enlist the help of a pro if you have plastic pipes.

Water pipes will unfreeze once temperatures stay above freezing long enough to thaw. As things warm up, you might hear gurgling and banging sounds from the pipes. It can take a while for the pipes to unfreeze, and they won’t without help if temperatures stay below freezing. Open cupboard doors, turn up the heat, and get out hair dryers, heat guns, space heaters, and heat lamps to speed up the thawing process. If you live where it’s frequently below freezing, consider whether pipe insulation is worth installing.
