"Jason Nikrad and his crew are an absolute amazing team. They were on-time , friendly , professional and worked hard and knowledgeable. Communication was a breeze and I will be very happy to have them back to my home to do any repairs or new build construction in the future! They were careful of my property and they made sure to clean up afterwards. Empire Stone is a perfect 5 Star Masonry Company to hire!!"

"Gavin Hecht was highly knowledgeable about the job to be done. He arrived precisely at the appointed time and did the complete job in one day, going above and beyond my expectations for the job content. His work was excellent in appearance and quality. I would recommend Hecht's Masonry LLC for brick, cement block and retaining wall structures of masonry materials."

"Flawless experience. Jordan and Ryan were efficient. The quote was beyond competitive and Jordan was much knowledgeable than the bigger firms we met. They installed piers under our house's front entrance. We have great confidence the work was done right."

"This spring we were in search of a company to pour a concrete patio as we were removing our old floating deck. We came across Clark Companies at the White Bear Home Show @ The Hippodrome. They followed up promptly afterwards and set a time to come out for a quote. They answered all our questions and helped us envision what it could look like. They were the only company we had out that actually cared (the others you probably hear advertised all the time). If you're here because you are researching them you can see they do this all the time and they do it well. They gave us many options to choose from for the patio & other items to complete the project (I.e stairs or grass seed). During the installation they were very professional and consulted with us along the way to make sure we were happy before all was said and done. Thank you Clark Companies! We look forward to enjoying our new space for years to come!"

"No one likes to spend hard earned dollars to raise concrete. Our case was no different. Mark and Nick were great. Hardworking. Willing to address our concerns. that were not specifically spelled out as well as they should have been by Tyler, our adjuster. We had documented all conversations and Mark made the corrections as needed. No surprise overages. Thank you."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Some older brick material is extremely hard, making it tough to create a hole. Rather than using a typical wood drill bit, always use a masonry drill bit when drilling into brick. For extremely hard brick, using a power drill with a hammer function may give you better results. The drill bit will heat up as it goes into the extremely hard brick, so you may need to stop after a few minutes and allow the bit to cool before starting to drill again.

When painting brick, each application method has pros and cons. Spraying is much faster but may not penetrate the porous surface of the bricks. Rolling is effective for getting paint into the bricks but doesn't work as well on the mortar. Brushing is very time-consuming and also won't penetrate beyond the surface. For the best results, a combination of spraying and rolling is often recommended. If you use a roller, choose a thick option (at least a half-inch) and ensure the paint gets into all the crevices for even coverage.

Yes, brick can breathe through limewash. Limewash is a breathable coating made from natural lime and water, allowing moisture to pass through while providing a protective layer. Unlike synthetic paints or sealants, which can trap moisture within the brick and lead to issues like mold, limewash allows the brick to maintain its natural breathability. This characteristic makes limewash an ideal choice for historic structures where preserving the integrity of the brick is essential.

Mortar is a mixture of sand and cement that binds materials, such as bricks, stones, and concrete blocks, together. Think of it as the glue that fills in the gaps between bricks and stones, then seals them in place to prevent damage or deterioration. Mortar also helps spread the load across a wall or structure, keeping cracks and shifting at bay.

Yes, an outdoor fireplace should use fire bricks. Fire bricks are specially designed to withstand high levels of heat and thus won’t crack as easily as regular bricks when exposed to the intense heat inside a fireplace.
