"We hired Concrete Images after taking bids from 2 other concrete contractors. They were the most competitive. We had a broken down asphalt walkway 490 feet long to replace along with several sidewalk repairs to be completed. Jim and his crew came in and finished the project in 4 days. Excellent workmanship and clean cut crew. I would use them again in a heartbeat. Jim Smith Director of Facilities St. Raphael Church and School Crystal, MN"

"As it pertains to professionalism, punctuality, quality, communication, and value John & Jerry Co was by far one of the best contractors that I’ve worked with. The asphalt driveway was replaced and it looks great. From scheduling and providing the free estimate, laying the base, to smoothing out the new asphalt, which was followed-up with meticulous clean up – all employees that I came in contact with were extremely professional and friendly. The crew was also very courteous to my neighbors and their properties. The project was top notch and turned out just as I had hoped. Need to also mention the job was completed ahead of scheduled. I highly recommend John & Jerry Co. as a contractor who can be counted on to do a great job."

"This was a great experience. If you don't want to bother to read the details, the takeaway is that Northland should be on the shortlist for your home fence project. Northland was one of four fence installation companies my wife and I contacted to request an estimate for our backyard fence. We were replacing a little over 70 feet of fencing in our backyard (both metal hurricane fence and wood privacy fence) with full privacy fencing. Northland's response was a formal estimate, including an overhead view of our property with the estimated fence outlined. It was the most professional response we received. The cost was well within range of the other three companies we contacted. Only Northland's vinyl fences came with a lifetime warranty. We went with Northland because of the lifetime guarantee and because we preferred the vinyl material. Every interaction with Northland throughout this process only confirmed that we had made the right decision. The sales team is quick to respond to every inquiry. I never felt rushed or pressured - indeed, to the contrary, they offered a free in-person consultation if we didn't have enough information to decide from the estimate. We had a lot of questions, and they were very patient, responsive, and helpful. The communication is terrific. They clearly spell out what you can expect from the process, from digging out your own property pins or identifying private utility lines (they provide resources for this) to the timeline of the work. They tell you when you're being moved from one area of service (sales, billing, installation teams) to another, and each group is responsive. At the time of our down payment (50% of the estimate), we were provided a definite date for the removal of our existing fence and the driving of our new fence posts, seven and a half weeks later. This is the only date we had to be available for the installation crew. The drive crew arrived earlier than their estimated window, and our consultation with the employee was about ten minutes. They quickly and quietly dismantled our fence, leaving most in a pile in our driveway for the haul crew to remove. My wife and I both work from home, but the work was done quietly enough that it didn't disturb either of us. The crew also dealt with multiple inquiries from nosy neighbors, which they handled with professionalism. The haul crew arrived about a week later to take our old fence materials. They didn't require us to be home for that part of the process. Work was completed in under a half hour. We were provided a three-week window during which time we could expect the installation crew to complete installation. It was just over two weeks before the crew arrived to complete work. The installation crew did not need to meet with us and began work as soon as they arrived, completing the work quietly and efficiently in a few hours. The fence looks fantastic. Our backyard is completely transformed. The white vinyl fence looks both modern and classic at the same time. The gates work wonderfully (and close automatically). We wanted our backyard to be quiet and private, but I didn't expect it to look this nice. I'm really impressed by the entire experience. Great job, Northland."

"Empire did tuckpointing on our brick as well as cleaned out all the cracks between concrete slabs on the drive way and re-caulked them. Great work and good to invest in proper driveway sealing to prevent erosion. The quality of the caulking and tuckpointing was excellent and you could tell these are seasoned professionals. Would use them again!"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Wet cutting is usually the preferred method. It controls dust, which helps protect your lungs and makes for a cleaner working environment. Plus, the water cools the blade, preventing overheating and prolonging its life while providing smoother, more precise cuts. The downside is the mess—water and asphalt sludge can be messy to clean. Dry cutting, though convenient if water isn’t available, creates a lot of dust, which can be harmful. This also increases the risk of blade damage due to overheating. So, if you have the option, wet cutting is the better method for most asphalt jobs.

An asphalt driveway should be at least 3 inches thick over a compacted gravel base. Areas with poor drainage should have a thicker stone base. To install a new asphalt driveway over an existing driveway, the new asphalt should be at least 2 inches thick and the existing driveway should be in relatively good condition.

The dimensions of a driveway apron vary based on local building codes, the width of your driveway, and the distance between the driveway and the road. On average, aprons range from 12 to 24 feet wide and 8 to 18 feet long. Typically, the end of the apron connected to the driveway matches its width—such as 10 to 12 feet for a single-car driveway—while the end at the street flares out to allow cars to turn in and out more easily. In some areas, you may not be responsible for the portion of the apron that extends beyond the sidewalk, but this depends on local laws.

If you notice minor cosmetic problems with your driveway, you should seal it. Look out for cracks and holes on the surface, faded asphalt or concrete, and stains from oil and other chemicals. Replacing your driveway may be necessary if you’re dealing with significant problems—¼-inch cracks, large potholes, and puddles from drainage issues. The cost to install an asphalt driveway typically ranges between $4,200 and $9,000, significantly more than resealing. Consider talking to a professional to discuss whether resurfacing your driveway—a midway project between resealing and replacing—is a better option for you.

Cobblestone is just one of many driveway materials. Other, more economical, albeit less elaborate options include concrete, asphalt, and gravel.

If you want a material that most closely resembles cobblestone, your best option is bricks or pavers. Both cost anywhere from $10 to $50 per square foot and can be laid in all kinds of patterns. Depending on the type of paver you choose, you can also get a good bang for your buck by investing in durable natural stone.
