"This project which should have been simple has been a nightmare from the beginning. I needed a quartz countertop for my master bathroom. The lead times were excessively long just to get into their queue (over a month from measure to install) which drastically slowed down our project. Then, two out of the three measurements were wrong upon install--including the wrong size sink hole for our undermount sinks. Dealing with this has been a huge hassle for us and for the most part they have been challenging to schedule and work with. I am currently sitting at home waiting for them to arrive and they are 30 minutes past the promised window. I would never use again."

A fireplace is, by definition, an enclosed space where you burn wood or other fuel for the purpose of generating light and heat. A firepit burns wood and is much less expensive to build, but they aren’t technically a fireplace as it isn’t enclosed. While it is possible to do this kind of project at any point in the year, save it for the mildest parts of winter if you can. That way, your backyard won’t be under construction during prime grilling season. Plus, contractors tend to be less busy on outdoor projects then, so you might get a better deal and the installation might take less time.

In many cases, you will not need permits to install an outdoor kitchen because it’s not usually considered a permanent structure and doesn’t require a foundation. If you run natural gas lines to a grill, plumbing lines to an outdoor sink, or electrical lines for lighting and power, your contractor will likely need to pull permits.

However, every municipality is different, so you should defer to a professional outdoor kitchen contractor to confirm which portions of your outdoor kitchen project require building permits.

You can build an outdoor kitchen on a deck, but you should choose composite decking since it's more heat-resistant. Metal deck materials like steel and aluminum are also good choices because they're less flammable than wood. You should also consider the weight of the kitchen—make sure your deck can support it and any appliances you plan to use. You should consult a structural engineer to confirm exactly how much weight your deck can safely support when building an outdoor kitchen.
