Many people choose to paint the walls first for a few reasons. First, it can provide a sense of accomplishment and motivation to tackle the rest of the room. Second, starting with the walls allows for more forgiveness of small mistakes. You can paint right up to the edge of the trim and easily cover up any accidental paint drops later. While flat and satin finishes are ideal for garage or front doors, siding, and trim, gloss and semi-gloss are more common on shutters. That’s because these types of finishes highlight this proportionally smaller exterior home feature, adding both contrast and layers of texture to the overall facade. Other types of finishes aren’t off limits, but you’ll have more success by choosing one that provides a nice sheen.
