"Prestige Painting removed built up stain and paint from our concrete patios and put on new stain. They turned out great, I was very happy with the end result. Kevin was great to work with and kept me up to date on how the project was going since the work was being done at our lake home and I was not there. I definitely will be using them again for other painting projects."

"My experience with Jared and Paula couldn’t have went any better and I love my new kitchen! They were on time, communicated daily even when I had a ton of questions choosing a color. I am so impressed with the quality and durability of my cabinets. They even painted my kitchen for free! I will definitely use them again in the near future!"

"We loved working with EcoBlast! They painted our exposed basement ceiling matte black. Mike was really easy to communicate with; he replied quickly and worked with our scheduling needs. Cody and the other gentleman who came to do the work prepped the space well, were thorough in their work, and were polite and curteous. The next day we discovered a tricky duct that didn’t take the paint well on the joints and they responded quickly to come and do a repair. Our ceiling looks fantastic; we are very pleased with the work."

"Bob reached out to me to discuss the painting project I had in mind. He listened well and offered his thoughts in exchange. Bob is very amiable and easy to converse with and seemed as excited as me to work on the project. I did not hire any painters from the list provided to me due to budget constraints. Bob would have been my first choice because if his friendliness and his bid was the lowest offered and the most detailed."

Interior Painting questions, answered by experts

There are times when you should remove all exterior paint before repainting. This includes when you need to get rid of lead-based paint (which should be done by a pro), or if you need to apply a different finish than what’s already there. Your house may also have too many pre-existing layers of old paint, in which case you’ll be better off getting rid of the old layers first.

In many cases, professionals can completely remove certain types of smoke damage from walls and ceilings, but it’s only possible if the damage is minor. For more extensive damage from major fires, you’ll likely need to replace the damaged materials entirely. Some items, like upholstered furniture, are much trickier to clean and might need to be replaced even if the smoke damage is minimal.

Most spray paints are oil-based, meaning you will need a solvent to dissolve them, like paint thinner, lacquer thinner, or acetone. While solvents can be useful in removing paint, they are also very flammable and require the use of a respirator. Beyond that, these products may smear paint and cannot be used on all surfaces.

Yes, you can paint over old exterior paint, but success depends on the condition of the existing paint and proper surface preparation. If the previous coating is in good shape (not cracked, peeling, or flaky), you can paint over it with less prep work. However, for the most durable and professional-looking results, follow these key preparation steps:

  • Clean the Surface: Thoroughly clean the exterior to remove all dirt, grime, and mildew. A pressure washer can be very effective for this.

  • Scrape and Sand: If the old paint is peeling, cracked, or flaky, you must scrape off all loose paint. After scraping, sand the surface to create a smooth, even base for the new paint. Sanding is especially important for wood siding.

  • Apply Primer: Using a quality exterior primer is highly recommended. It ensures the new paint adheres properly, improves durability, and provides a uniform finish. If you are painting a lighter color over a dark one, a tinted primer will help cover the old color more effectively.

Some brands offer paint-and-primer-in-one products for convenience. Taking the time to prepare the surface properly will not only increase your home's curb appeal but also help protect your siding and extend its life.

Yes, vinegar can remove polyurethane from wood, but it is a slow, inefficient, and inconsistent restoration method. Whatever your intention, it’s best to avoid using vinegar on wood with a polyurethane finish—though it can be an effective cleaner for other wood finishes.
