One way to sanitize and deodorize a carpet is to use a cleaning solution made from one part vinegar and two parts warm water. After you vacuum, spray the solution on parts of the carpet that smell, being careful not to oversaturate it. Let the solution sit for 15 to 20 minutes before you perform your normal carpet sanitation routine.

Most carpet cleaning solutions are safe to use in the home. However, to avoid irritation and health issues you can look for a neutral, mild detergent, especially one that’s marked as nontoxic or eco friendly. When in doubt, always check out the ingredient list. Some cleaning options only use steam heat to clean with little or no detergent, which could be an option if you’re worried. 

Use arm caps and rotate seat cushions to prolong the life of your microfiber couch and maintain it after cleaning. Remove dry spills using a vacuum and brush, and consider increasing regular cleaning if the sofa is heavily used or if somebody in the home is sensitive to allergies.
