"I bought an Angie's List deal from All Day Haul Away for $99 (prepaid); they said by phone that my oversized piece would probably require an extra charge. Four months later when I called for a pickup, it was made by a business called Junk Genius (a subcontractor of All Day Haul Away?). Junk Genius's standard charge is $95, slightly less than the cost of the Angie's List deal I had already paid. Junk Genius said nothing about the load being oversized. Next time, I would try calling Junk Genius first."

"I called Junk Justice to pick up and haul away several items from my home after remodeling my basement. My garage was full and I have a very busy schedule. I didn’t have time to do it myself. I spoke to Wes and told him what I wanted done. He was very accommodating and made it so easy. He showed up on time and was very professional. Wes loaded everything up and thanked me for my business. I was so impressed that I asked him to come back and haul away a bunch of brush that I had stacked up in a huge pile. I was so happy when it was all done. I would definitely use Junk Justice again and would definitely recommend him."

"Someone responded to my weekend inquiry promptly. The service was scheduled quickly. The guys did great, cleaned up the garbage pile and swepted the floor cleaner than it has been in awhile, even took the trash from the garbage cans. I would hire again in a heart beat. Thanks Junk Happens."

"They responded promptly to my initial inquiries, and arrived right on time on the day of our appointment (during the first major snowfall of the year, even) and removed the stuff I needed hauled away very efficiently. Very friendly and professional folks. Even after offering them a bit extra for hauling out some additional oversized boxes for me as well as the things we'd prearranged, I'm quite sure I couldn't have found a better price short of just doing it myself. I'd recommend them to anyone, and will certainly be calling on them again myself."

Garbage Collection questions, answered by experts

While the drain connection for a garbage disposal is nearly universal and fits standard sink drain holes of 3 1/2 to 4 inches, the size of the disposal unit itself is not. You must have enough space in the cabinet underneath your sink to accommodate the disposal's housing. A larger model may not fit in a compact cabinet or if the existing plumbing is arranged in an unusual way. Before buying a new garbage disposal, measure the available space under your sink. If you are replacing an old unit, it's often easiest to choose a new model of a similar size.

These appliances certainly increase the number of things allowed down the drain, but they’re not foolproof. There are several items you shouldn’t put in your garbage disposal, according to manufacturers and technicians. Don’t put coffee grounds down the drain. The same goes for eggshells, potato peels, hard foods, onion skins, and any dry, expandable food. Most importantly, never put grease or oils down the drain.

Soil is just one of the items you shouldn't put down a garbage disposal. Garbage disposals are only meant for soft, non-fibrous foods. Large amounts of topsoil, dirt, or rocks will damage the blades of your garbage disposal or clog the pipes. If a small amount of dirt goes down the drain as you repot a plant, you shouldn't have to worry, but never dump a whole pot of soil in the sink for fast disposal.

To prevent drain clogs, perform regular maintenance and cleaning. Avoid disposing of substances like grease or coffee grounds down the sink. Additionally, installing and routinely using drain strainers can help catch debris and prevent blockages from forming.

If you cook a lot or have a larger household, a garbage disposal can be worth it, since it streamlines your kitchen duties and helps to keep food waste out of landfills. It helps to know the cost of garbage disposal installation before you make your decision. The average price is about $400, but you can expect to pay more for higher-end models or if you hire a pro to do the job for you.
