"I hired Clark Companies to do grading, bury gutter down spouts, and install decorative rock around my house. They did a great job, finished up in a day, and planted seed to restore the grass that was unavoidably disturbed. Iâ m very pleased, highly recommend Clark Companies and would use them in the future."

"Where to even start. This company is leaps and bounds ahead of the competition. I recently hired Gervais Contracting to install a new driveway and handle the dirt work for a new garage. The proposed shed pad area was about 8 feet lower than the house grade. I consulted five other excavation contractors, but they only wanted to raise the grade by 1 foot, which would have caused significant water problems in the future. When Zach from Gervais Contracting came out, he expressed his concerns about this approach. He explained that simply raising the grade by 1 foot would lead to tremendous water issues. To confirm, I had an engineer visit my house, and he agreed completely with Zach's assessment. Zach then worked his magic, finding the appropriate grade to ensure maximum watershed away from the new building, eliminating any future water problems. Zach was the only contractor out of the five who provided the right advice and solution. Despite being a young guy, his knowledge in the industry is unmatched. From start to finish, he was easy to communicate with, always responsive to my calls, and incredibly knowledgeable. When the project was completed, my driveway was smooth as glass, and the shed pad was perfectly level and ready for concrete. If I could give 100 stars, I would. This is the best contractor I have worked with in my 56 years. Thank you so much, Zach, and your crew at Gervais Contracting! Incredible services that you guys provide, Hire these guys even if they have the higher price because you cannot beat the level of knowledge, honesty and above Quality work they provide !! You will not regret it"

"Contacting them after seeing their ad in the Angie's List magazine. John was great to work with and he and the team did a great job. Consulted with me throughout the entire process and we're very happy with the result. Leveled and graded our backyard (~4,000 feet) and laid new sod."

"In Spring 2012, we obtained quotes from three companies to tear out two existing retaining walls along the driveway and re-build them using Versalok, excavate and grade the backyard, and build a 3.5 - 4 foot retaining wall in the backyard using the stone from the old retaining walls. Genadek had the middle quote; they were also the only company to follow up with a phone call. The whole job took about 4 1/2 weeks. Stan, Mike, Tim,  Rob and Andrew were very professional and friendly; our neighbors even raved about them. They cleaned up the job site at the end of each day and communicated frequently so there were no surprises.
My only recommendation to those interested in hiring Genadek is to get on their schedule early. Their calendar books up fast!

"I was so appreciative of their willingness to help me create! They have an eye for detail. We started from scratch with a blank canvas of a backyard, and we made a beautiful patio and dog park for my dogs. I had ideas of things I wanted but Ross very kindly let me know how his way would be better...you know, because professionals understand that retaining walls help hold earth together and my idea would have caused a mud slide...YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING!!!"

Excavating questions, answered by experts

You can bury underground electrical wire six inches deep—but only if you use a rigid metal electrical conduit. For rigid, non-metallic conduits, bury the wire at least 12 inches deep. If using an underground feeder cable rated for direct burial, you'll need to place it at least 18 inches deep, as it has no conduit for extra protection.

A trench that is less than 5 feet deep often doesn't require a protective system. Most residential trenches will not go this deep (the typical residential drainage trench is just 18 inches deep). In the event that an excavator needs to dig more than 5 feet beneath the surface, a protective system is required unless the excavation is in entirely stable rock.

A joint utility trench, or joint trench, is a long, buried ditch on a property that contains two or more utility lines rather than running the lines in multiple trenches. Some utilities, like gas and electric or electric and communication lines, are better suited to joint trenching, while others, like water and sewer, are not allowed to be in the same trench.

Trenchers can dig holes as narrow as 4 inches or as wide as 4 feet. Check the specifications of the trencher you rent or buy to determine how wide it will cut into the landscape. Better yet, let the excavation company know how wide you’d like the trench to be, and they can help you choose the right trencher for the job (or do it for you).

Some two-in-one tools and machines do both jobs, and those could be the right solution for smaller residential projects. However, the phrase “use the right tool for the job” definitely applies to digging. For the best results, get two separate tools for your trenching and landscape edging projects or call a pro to take care of everything for you.
