For more than 30 years, Houle Insulation Inc., a Minnesota based insulation contractor, has been re-insulating homes in Minnesota just like yours. A better insulated home is more energy efficient, comfortable and quiet. It will save you money on utility bills for years to come. And, by using less energy to heat and cool your home, you reduce the negative impacts on the environment caused by energy use. Houle Insulation Inc. specializes in re-insulating existing homes; sidewalls, attics, bypass sealing and blower door testing in the state of Minnesota. Blowing cellulose insulation into your walls and floors, and sealing attic bypasses can reduce high heating and cooling bills, ice dams and drafty rooms. Some other problems homeowners are faced with are frost, mold and water damage to ceilings. The discomforts of a poorly insulated home are often wrongly blamed on furnace and air conditioning problems when the actual cause is the insulation or installation of the insulation. You could save significantly on your heating and cooling bills by having attic bypasses sealed and insulating your walls and attic to adequate levels.

"These guys are the best. My 100-year old house never had much insulation in the attic and after a problem with ice dams in 2019 I decided to get the attic insulated. Houle was on the list of CenterPoint-approved contractors. They came when they said they would, did the work quickly, explained what they had done and cleaned up. They processed my rebate application for me too. My heating bills noticeably dropped last winter, and now that it is warm my house has stayed cooler longer. This summer, I had some water damage on a bedroom ceiling and wondered if the insulation work had somehow disconnected a pump for the AC unit in the attic. Houle sent techs out the same day to check. It turned out the pump had died on its own. The two techs took the time to do their own investigation of what the problem was, and did so cheerfully. Houle stands by their work and takes customer service seriously. I am impressed."

"Lewis Insulation came out for work on my home for ice dam issues. Lewis Insulation was to air seal our attic and add insulation. We decided to move forward. Lewis Insulation allegedly performed the work, but unfortunately the ice dam issues persisted. In short, we flushed thousands down the drain by going with Lewis Insulation. Xcel energy performed a home energy audit for us after Lewis Insulation performed the work. The Xcel home energy audit revealed that air sealing was missed during the air sealing process. After confronting Lewis Insulation, the team claimed some of these areas were inaccessible. This includes our furnace flue, which gives off a ton of heat in the winter. For those who may not be aware, this is egregious because of how much heat comes off that pipe. At no point did Lewis Insulation inform me that they were unable to air seal specific areas, including the flue. Lastly, they failed to insulate our basement rim joists properly. In short, we paid to have the team air seal our home and help with ice dams. They failed to eliminate the ice dams, and Xcel suggested we get our home air sealed again. I cannot recommend this company to anyone."

"I appreciated the accurate estimate for the work as well as the advice on preventing it from happening again. The crew arrived on time and raised the walkway section so it’s level now. They also caulked between the driveway and garage slabs."

What started as a two person remodeling company in 1979 has grown into a multi-state construction and home improvement enterprise boasting more than 100,000 happy customers. Delighting our customers, whether they are building new, remodeling or upgrading their home with a new gutter system or roofing installation, is easy to do with the great products we offer and our staff of hardworking and talented employees. Additional DBA: Midwest LeafGuard. Additional service area: Chippewa, Dunn, Eau Claire, Pepin, Pierce, Saint Croix & Trempealeau Counties

"We had a french patio door and 11 windows replaced in our home in Stillwater, Mn. We were extremely pleased with all areas of the process. Although the project was originally planned for mid November and did not start until mid-December and the weather created a few issues, the project was completed in a timely manner once it was started. I was very pleased with our installation crew: Chris, Gabe and Tanner. They worked very hard, were very considerate and punctual. Our sales person, Chris, did an excellent job in explaining the construction and product, Marvin Infinity windows and doors. The QC inspector, Josh was extremely thorough. Very little work had to be redone but Josh made sure every scratch and defect was replaced. We were extremely pleased with the thoroughness of his work. Every member of the Lindus team was professional, polite, informative and respectful. We listen to Andy Lindus on WCCO radio and that was the reason we choose Lindus Construction. The cost of our project was high and more than I expected to pay but we are very pleased with the end result."

Twin City Insulation, LLC, has been doing weatherization and insulation for more than 30 years. We provide excellent service for our customers and guarantee quality work. We are happy to provide for your weatherization and insulation needs.

"Three people from Twin City Insulation arrived at my home just before 7 AM on the appointed day. One of the first things they did was carefully place clean tarps on the floors in any areas where they would be walking. The owner, Caleb See, and I discussed the work to be done and he relayed the information to his workers, including areas which needed to be sealed/insulated to prevent air leaks. The continuously running ventilation fan was to be installed in the master bathroom. Mr. See explained possible logistical problems that could be encountered in doing this (including installation in a vaulted ceiling). Across the hall from the master bathroom is a laundry room with an exhaust fan. Ultimately, we jointly chose this location for the fan. Mr. See carefully covered cabinetry in that room with plastic sheeting. He installed the fan and the other men worked in the attic, insulating the attic walls to R30 with fiberglass batts and house wrap, installing vent chutes and sealing all attic bypasses. Ceiling pot lights were also calked to prevent air leaks and a drop soffit/ceiling drop were insulated and sealed. Mr. See kept me informed about the progress and any problems encountered. He and his crew discovered exhaust fans from another bathroom and in the kitchen were only vented into the attic. Mr. See also discovered that the kitchen exhaust fan had been improperly installed and he corrected it. (I asked if they could do the additional work to correct these problems and gladly paid an additional $500 to install the new ducting and new roof vents for those fans.) The crew returned the following morning to complete the job. They did a great job cleaning up---carefully folding the tarps to contain any debris. (Mr. See told me they shake them out in the truck, so the debris isn't even left in the yard!) They vacuumed the garage floor and the throw rugs near the door and intended to vacuum the rest of the areas in the house, but I told them not to do it because I had more work scheduled to be done the following day and I would need to vacuum after that. I was very impressed by all members of the company: they were very professional, arrived promptly at the time they said they would (actually, they were a little early!), were respectful of my property, kept me well informed and did a nice job of cleaning up. I definitely would recommend using Twin City Insulation!"

Insulation questions, answered by experts

You don’t need to remove old insulation before adding new insulation. As long as the old insulation is still in good shape—not wet, physically damaged, or moldy—then you can stack new insulation on top of old insulation to get a compounding effect. You can also mix different types of insulation, like adding blown-in insulation around existing fiberglass batt insulation or installing rigid insulation boards over rafters in your attic that already have batt insulation installed. If your existing insulation is very old or damaged, though, you’ll likely see more benefit from removing it and replacing it instead.

Once installed, injection insulation requires little maintenance, but periodic inspections for air leaks or moisture buildup are recommended.

Because of the moisture concern, open-cell foam requires a vapor barrier. The barrier protects against high humidity and moisture exposure in rooms such as basements, bathrooms, or exterior walls. It wouldn't be necessary in dry interior spaces.

If you have a number of large icicles on your roof, you may have an issue with insulation. This is particularly true if you’re also dealing with ice dams. A roofing contractor can diagnose potential insultation issues and help you come up with a game plan to solve them.

Homeowners insurance covers some damage caused by ice dams, but it depends on the type of damage. Insurance policies will often cover things like interior water damage, roof collapse, and actual shingle damage resulting from ice formation, but it depends on your policy. Check your coverage information or contact your insurer to find out what your plan covers. Keep in mind that any damage caused by implementing a DIY solution to remove ice dams likely won’t be covered.
