"These guys are the best. My 100-year old house never had much insulation in the attic and after a problem with ice dams in 2019 I decided to get the attic insulated. Houle was on the list of CenterPoint-approved contractors. They came when they said they would, did the work quickly, explained what they had done and cleaned up. They processed my rebate application for me too. My heating bills noticeably dropped last winter, and now that it is warm my house has stayed cooler longer. This summer, I had some water damage on a bedroom ceiling and wondered if the insulation work had somehow disconnected a pump for the AC unit in the attic. Houle sent techs out the same day to check. It turned out the pump had died on its own. The two techs took the time to do their own investigation of what the problem was, and did so cheerfully. Houle stands by their work and takes customer service seriously. I am impressed."

"I recently had the pleasure of working with Koala Insulation of St. Paul for the installation of 4 inches of spray foam insulation in my garage attic, and I couldn't be more satisfied with the results. From the outset, Koala Insulation impressed me with their professionalism and expertise. Their team was punctual, arriving on time for the initial consultation and installation. They took the time to explain the benefits of spray foam insulation, including its superior air sealing properties and energy efficiency compared to traditional insulation materials. This thorough approach gave me confidence in my decision. On installation day, the crew was efficient and respectful of my home. They came fully prepared with all the necessary equipment, and I appreciated their attention to cleanliness. They took care to cover areas that needed protection, minimizing any mess during the installation process. The actual application of the spray foam was quick and straightforward, and the team worked collaboratively to ensure a high-quality finish. After the installation, the team provided useful guidance on maintaining the insulation and what to expect in terms of performance. They made themselves available for any follow-up questions, which shows their commitment to customer satisfaction even after the job was completed. I highly recommend Koala Insulation of St. Paul for anyone considering an insulation project, including upgrading or replacing your current fiberglass insulation. Their timely service, knowledgeable staff, and high-quality workmanship resulted in a seamless experience will undoubtedly improved my home's comfort and energy efficiency as we head into the cold season. "Professional and courteous. The folks on site took time to answer any question, wore masks and cleaned up well. They did great job painting the stucco after insulation and patching - house looks great. The insulation is already making huge difference in my 1911 house in Minneapolis- not sure the boiler will kick in till December."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

DIY insulation installation is feasible, particularly for basic rolls or batts, if you have the right protective gear and knowledge. However, hiring a professional ensures even, full coverage for maximum efficiency.

Selling a house with spray foam insulation can be challenging due to concerns about improper installation or its compatibility with the home's structure. If not applied correctly, spray foam can cause issues such as moisture buildup, cracking, or damage to wiring and plumbing. If the insulation didn't cure correctly, there are also flammability concerns. Removing or repairing this type of insulation can pose risks as well.

You do not need to drywall over most types of garage insulation. However, doing so can increase noise reduction, make the space more attractive, and keep children and pets from touching harmful fiberglass insulation. If you’re using cellulose or some other type of blown-in insulation (fiberglass and mineral wool are common), you will need drywall to contain the insulation material.

To cover your HVAC ducts and air vents during construction, use plastic sheets or drop cloths secured with painter's tape. Be sure to cover all supply vents on your floors and walls, as well as the larger HVAC return vent, which is typically on the ceiling. While canvas drop cloths can also be used, they may not catch all the fine dust. It is crucial to shut off your HVAC system or at least the zone where construction is happening. Running the system with vents sealed can put significant strain on the blower motor and air handler. For additional dust containment, you can also hang plastic sheets over doorways to separate the construction area from the rest of your home.

It is usually possible to install insulation yourself, but it’s often better to hire an insulation professional. An experienced insulation pro can determine which type of insulation is best for your space and the R-value get the most value and comfort in your home. Certain types of insulation can cause skin, eye, and lung irritation, and a professional will have the equipment necessary to keep themselves safe and limit the effect on your indoor air quality after the installation. Certain types of insulation—like blown-in and loose-fill insulation—demand a professional for proper functionality and safe installation.
