After stripping the deck there were a few more boards where some rotting was identified and Barak and his team replaced them promptly. Stain looks great and made an immediate difference. I had been contemplating if my 20 year old deck was too far gone and needed replacing... but after seeing what Barak could do with stripping the old paint off, replacing some bad boards, and staining... "We had a french patio door and 11 windows replaced in our home in Stillwater, Mn. We were extremely pleased with all areas of the process. Although the project was originally planned for mid November and did not start until mid-December and the weather created a few issues, the project was completed in a timely manner once it was started. I was very pleased with our installation crew: Chris, Gabe and Tanner. They worked very hard, were very considerate and punctual. Our sales person, Chris, did an excellent job in explaining the construction and product, Marvin Infinity windows and doors. The QC inspector, Josh was extremely thorough. Very little work had to be redone but Josh made sure every scratch and defect was replaced. We were extremely pleased with the thoroughness of his work. Typically, most residential wooden decks are designed to support approximately 40 pounds per square foot, including the deck’s weight and any items placed on it. While this is fine for typical use, it is usually not enough to hold the weight of a hot tub filled with water and people. To safely support a hot tub, your wood deck will likely require reinforcement. Therefore, it’s best to have a contractor or a structural engineer assess it before hot tub installation.

You can’t fix warped composite decking boards, but you can replace them so your deck surface is no longer warped. For more severely warped decks, especially those with damaged joists or support beams, you’ll need a pro to inspect the deck and recommend whether you should replace the structure or repair the damage.

You can add a roof to most decks, but you need to have it inspected first. If your deck didn’t come with a roof initially, it may not be able to handle the weight without some structural changes. You can add additional supports to your existing deck to safely add a roof, and tying your deck’s roof to an exterior wall can help add some structural stability, but remember these aren’t DIY projects and need to be left to a pro. 

Several types of porches are available to meet your needs and style preferences. Some common porch types include:

  • Porticos are essentially a roof over a walkway leading to the home's front entrance. 

  • Sunrooms are closed-in porches that are an extension of the house with glass or plastic panels that allow optimal sunlight. 

  • Wraparound porches extend around the entire home, or at least the front and one side, and offer multiple entrances to the house.

  • Back porches are an extension of the home’s floor into the outdoors. These offer more protection and privacy than a deck.

Learning how to fix water-damaged or swollen wood is possible, but it won’t always work if there is significant warping or structural damage that was caused by the water. Cosmetic issues such as nicks, bubbling and peeling can often be fixed by using an iron, sanding, or using wood filler.
