"The owner of Above All Tile and one, John Shar, did three projects for me in my 1930s era home: replaced the original tile in my main entryway; regrouted the tile in a bathroom; and tiled my fireplace. The entryway project was pretty straightforward except that the subfloor had a hump in it and the door jamb was not parallel to the floor. These unexpected issues were addressed at no additional cost and the floor turned out great. The bathroom regrouting required removal and replacement of what was probably the original grout. Some of the grout lines were so thin that it was really challenging to remove it. John worked from about 9:30 in the morning until about 8 at night to get the first phase of the project done. I had selected a grout color; however, John suggested that I reconsider at use a greyer shade of white in order to better match some existing grout. He took his suggestion and as a result, you cannot tell the newly grouted area from the original. The fireplace was a much more complicated project. The hearth was replaced, and this required that the old oak that “framed” the hearth over the oak floor be replaced with a thicker, tapered frame that John had to construct. It looks great. The fireplace surround had been brick. This was tiled over using a hand-made porcelain tile. However, it was extremely complicated to lay out because I wanted the all the tiles to have a vertical orientation and I did not want to have any of then cut. Among other things, this required that John frame in the outer perimeter of the surround with wood and the inner perimeter with plain black tile. The results are gorgeous! John showed himself to be a craftsman with great problem-solving abilities, artistic sensibilities, and a tremendous can-do attitude. His prices were very fair. I recommend Above All without hesitation."

Nicholas Builders LLC was founded in 2013 and is owned by Jim Nicholas and Brandon Nicholas. Together, we founded the business with the goal to provide superior home renovations at a fair price. Providing great customer service and high quality of work is our most important goals. Hiring a contractor can be a difficult thing. You must trust them with your home which can be your most valuable possession. That's why, it's important to go with someone who values honesty and integrity above all else. We will work with you every step of the way to make the dream for your home a reality.

"Brandon and Jim really bailed me out as my father's house needed a lot of work. When they took on the project it was expected to be fairly limited in scope. However, after further review we needed them to do a lot more work than expected. They were busy with other projects at the time but they stepped up and did a great job. Bathroom, flooring, deck, strip paint to remove cigarette smell and repaint and more. This was done over a year ago. The reason for this review was a friend asked for a reference and I thought fondly about how they bailed me out."

FAQs for ceramic tile service projects in Bloomington, MN

The average cost of installing tile is around $2,000, ranging between $400 and $6,500, depending on the type of tile, square footage of tile, and whether or not your tiling contractor performs site preparation, like removing old tile. On average, you can expect to pay between $5 and $45 per square foot, largely depending on the type and quality of the tiles you choose. For example, ceramic and travertine tile cost about $1 per square foot, but luxury tile options like marble cost up to $350 per square foot, not including labor.

Yes, tiling a bathroom is a great way to boost the value of your home. Tile is a highly durable and attractive building material, and savvy buyers will know they’re getting a low-maintenance flooring or wall covering that can last for 75 years or more. Keep in mind that the return on investment from tiling your bathroom will likely be higher if a professional tile installer does the work. Tiling is a complicated job, and mistakes will be very evident and detract from the appearance and value of the finished work.

On average, you can expect the tiling in your bathroom to take around 12 hours, usually spread over at least two to three days. The process can take longer if your tile installer needs to remove old tile first. Tiling a floor takes around six hours, and tiling the shower area often takes six to 10 hours. Some factors that affect the length of the project include the type of tile, the layout of your bathroom, and any prep work that your installer needs to do beforehand. It’s best to have an alternate bathroom available during the process.

Tile will almost always last longer than laminate flooring, regardless of the type of tile installed. Porcelain tile can last for 75 years or more with proper care, and even less durable ceramic tile will last for 60 years or more, provided they’re installed by a tile professional. On the other hand, laminate flooring has an average lifespan of around 20 years, and you might only get 10 to 15 years out of low-cost laminate flooring. As such, tile will add far more value to your home than laminate.

To find a local tile installer, your first step is to connect with professionals in your area and interview them. Ask the following questions to get a sense of their experience and ability:

  • How many years have you been in business?

  • Do you have a list of references I can contact?

  • What materials—tile, thinset, and mortar—will you use?

  • Does your pricing include materials and labor?

  • How long will my bathroom or kitchen be out of commission while you work?

Then, compare prices to find the best value for your investment.
