"Had someone out to get a quote for an AC replacement. The estimator showed up on time and was polite and told me he would get a quote to me in about 24 hours. I never heard anything from them again. I emailed after a week and called after 2 weeks and never heard anything back. I guess they don't want my business?"

"Tummons was one of six estimates, after one company stated that we would need to replace the air cooling unit. The rest all quickly stated that we needed to replace the unit. Tim wanted to check the unit prior to moving forward on a replacement. He found a way to fix the unit and saved us over 2,000. HIs integrity and knowledge was greatly appreciated.

"The Ductz of Mid Michigan team are amazing. We have a home built in 1959 and we are pretty sure the ducts have never been cleaned. After they cleaned our ducts we noticed a big difference in air quality. Its like living in a new home because it doesn't smell like dog anymore. Thank you so much for taking care of our home."

Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

A new HVAC system combines components to control indoor temperature and air quality. Features include a furnace or heat pump and an air conditioner or evaporator coil, depending on the climate requirements. It also involves a network of ductwork for air distribution, a thermostat for temperature regulation, and electrical connections. Air purifiers or humidifiers can be integrated to improve indoor air quality.

To diagnose a bad HVAC or AC damper, assess the airflow from your vents. For a manual damper, close it, run your system, and check for airflow. If air is still coming through the vents, the damper is likely faulty and needs repair or replacement. For an automatic damper, turn on your HVAC system and monitor the airflow and room temperature. Signs of a problem include low airflow, a room that won't maintain its set temperature, or a drafty feeling. If you suspect a faulty automatic damper, you may need to hire a professional for repairs.

If your HVAC system's capacity doesn't match the required CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute), imbalances can occur. An undersized system struggles to maintain desired temperatures, leading to discomfort. An oversized system might short-cycle, wasting energy and causing temperature fluctuations. Properly matching capacity to CFM ensures efficient and consistent heating, cooling, and home ventilation system performance.

Trick question: There is no difference between an AC and a furnace blower motor. Whether you have central air and heat or just one of these, the same blower motor carries hot and cold air throughout the ductwork in your home. Certain systems may have separate blower motors for the AC and furnace, but each serves the same function.

In most cases, you should hire a professional to carry out services on your HVAC system, as the components are complicated, expensive, and potentially dangerous to work with. However, there are a few things you can do on your own to keep your HVAC system in good condition, including changing your filters every three months, keeping the area around your outdoor condenser clear of debris and plant growth, making sure your or intakes aren’t blocked, and keeping an eye out for increased energy bills, strange noises, and unusual odors related to your equipment.
