"I got quotes from 3 different companies to extend our side yard fence out about 26 feet and add a double gate in the front. I'm glad I went with Bontrager Fencing (found them through Angi)! They drove over from Charlotte (to Portage) with all the supplies/equipment, arrived at noon and were done by 5:20ish. They hauled away all the old posts/boards/trash from the day. They were friendly, professional and very kind/patient with my kiddos when they wanted to "help" . Roy let each of them (7 yo & almost 5 yo) hammer in a few nails into a couple boards and the kids loved that! Roy & Wayne did a great job, were reasonably priced and I highly recommend Bontrager Fencing for any of your fencing needs!"

The bottom strand should sit between 12 to 15 inches from the ground. If you have a problem with small critters, you can aim for 8 inches. Most people prefer to keep the fence level by “stepping” the fence when running a horizontal fence over a slope. Stepping involves raising each panel between the posts as the fence moves over changes in slope, giving the fence line the appearance of stair steps. While this may be the preferred method of running a horizontal fence up a slope, there’s nothing wrong with installing your fence so it follows the undulations in the ground instead.

For a chain link fence, the ideal distance between fence posts is 6 to 10 feet apart. Measure carefully to ensure even spacing, and resist the temptation to extend the distance more than 10 feet. Doing so could impact the stability of your fence.

You can weather a new wood fence by applying vinegar with steel wool as a way to fade some of the coloring. You may also find it easier to stain your entire fence a new color instead of trying to get newer fence boards to match an older one.

Since wood is weaker when installed horizontally versus vertically, a horizontal fence is prone to sagging. You can prevent this drooping from happening by building a sturdier fence. Use softwoods that are more stable, such as cedar and redwood, or denser hardwoods for your fence materials. If you can’t afford these pricey materials, use thicker two-by-six pressure-treated pine boards or shorten the span the fence boards have to cover by installing more posts.
