The best solution to fix a foundation crack in your basement floor depends on the underlying cause. If you just have hairline cracks from settlements that are no longer growing, the best option is to seal them with a crack sealant. If the cracks continue to grow, one edge rises above the other, or there are signs that water is getting in through the crack, a professional repair will be necessary. Foundation cracks that are 1/8 inch wide or less, aren’t uneven across the gap, and don’t continue widening over time are usually just normal settling cracks and don’t suggest structural issues. Horizontal cracks and stair-step cracks on foundation walls, any cracks that continue widening, are wider than 1/8 inch, or where one side juts out beyond the other, are often indicative of structural damage.

Most single-story homes don't have foundations strong enough to support a second story, but they can be reinforced for an addition. A structural engineer can assess your foundation and what needs to be done to get it ready.
