A pressure washer’s size or power is measured in pounds per square inch (PSI). The amount of pressure you need will depend on your project and the material you’re washing, but consumer pressure washers range from 500 to 2,400 PSI. Porous materials like brick and stucco should not be blasted with anything stronger than 1,000 PSI, while you can use a PSI of up to 2,400 to clean a vinyl fence.

This process doesn’t necessarily require soap or detergent, but it definitely helps. You can get by with just using water, but remember, brick requires a lower-than-average pressure level when compared to concrete, so forgoing detergent increases the time it takes to spot clean stains and debris once you finish with the pressure washer. Brick is especially porous, so the less water you use on it, the better.

Generally 1-2 hours, depending on the area and level of dirt accumulation.

You can get more pressure out of your pressure washer by adjusting the pressure control knob clockwise to increase pressure (+). You can also check your nozzle for debris and clogs and remove anything you find with needle nose pliers. Switch to a nozzle with a lower-degree spray angle or a turbo nozzle to achieve more pressure at the tip. Check for leaks in the hose and connections, and make sure your water supply is offering enough pressure. 

Much like wood siding, it can be dangerous to use a pressure washer on composite siding. While normally durable, composite siding isn’t made to stand up to higher pressure settings. It also makes it very easy to damage the paint or finish on the siding. Some professional power washing companies may take the job on, but we recommend avoiding it, especially as a DIY project with a rented pressure washer.
