"Jon is awesome. He recently completed a whole bathroom renovation in our basement complete with tile, paint job, and installation. He is a reasonable and attentive workman, with a great eye and natural talent! I highly recommend him for any job, big or small."

"Project initiation: Representative Arrived promptly for project review / estimating meeting. Representative was pleasant and not "salesy". I appreciated that a lot! Provided several suggestions and options and respected my opinions and ideas. Project execution: Installers arrived on time and were friendly and reqpectful of our home and family. They worked quickly and efficiently. Our project was to install a new laminate floor. It was enlightening to watch them work and see their skill and professionalism. Overall: We found working with Reliable Renovations to be an excellent overall experience. We plan on using them again for other projects in the near future."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

You can lay tile directly on a plywood countertop, but if it’s a high-traffic surface in a kitchen, it’s better to add a moisture-resistant base. Plywood is susceptible to moisture, so if dampness seeps through from the surface around the sink or where you prep food, it can cause the plywood to warp, leading to grout damage, cracked tiles, or mold growth under the surface.

Yes, it’s always a good idea to keep a box or two of spare tiles after a home renovation project. Tiles can crack from improper installation, heavy foot traffic, and impact from drops. Having some extra tile on hand can make replacement fast, easy, and affordable. Plus, some manufacturers might discontinue particular colors or styles, and slight variations in tile colors between batches could mean mismatched tiles even if your product isn’t discontinued. Having a few spare tiles in storage can help avoid these issues, as well.

You can, in theory, tile your fireplace hearth with most tiles. However just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. For example, it’s much better to use unglazed tiles because glazed tiles are more resistant to cracking under extreme heat. Porcelain is more heat-resistant than ceramic, but you can still design the hearth as you like by putting the most heat-resistant tiles directly under the fire and, if it matches your style, add more decorative tiles further from the center of the fire.

There are several low-maintenance shower floor tiles to consider for your bathroom. Stone tiles are easy to keep clean and only need an occasional resealing to keep them looking their best. Porcelain is another low-maintenance choice, as it doesn’t stain easily. Vinyl is also suitable for easy upkeep. On the other hand, one of the highest maintenance options for bathrooms is wood tile.

Your floors should be completely level for tile, otherwise you risk damaging the tiles in the future. When there are even small gaps or hills in the subfloor beneath the tile, this puts more pressure on the tile when you walk around on the floor. With repeated traffic, the tiles are at risk of cracking, and you’ll have to deal with tile repairs sooner than if the floor was completely level.
