"Dale came into our home to test our water. He provided a demonstration with great education along the way to help us understand what he was looking for and how RainSoft could help. We have city water and were shocked to learn that our existing single-unit RO system in the kitchen, which we have used for years, was not cleaning our water the way we were told it was. I often thought about the internal impacts of chlorinated water but did not recognize the negative effects that happen to our bodies on the outside as well when our water is not clean and yet full of chemicals. Dale was so thoughtful and knowledgeable. We were very thankful for the insight and the level of options offered to meet us wherever we were financially. We would highly recommend an evaluation to anyone who does not know with confidence what is in their water."

"We just moved into our house from city water to well water. We did not understand the water softener system the tech took the time to explain how it works. He was very friendly and I would call them back for future service if needed."

"Excellent, honest service! Will refer to anyone that needs well work done. Had issues with our home holding water pressure when running multiple water sources in our home, Jamie was thorough to pinpoint the problem. I thought we needed the well pump changed but that wasn t it.. it was a lil corroded part that was inhibiting proper water flow! Instead of hundreds being charged it was only 125$! Very happy!"

"Pretty good experience. I seldom give a full score of 5. At any rate the water filtration system was installed well except for making a short cut in bringing an electric cord from the outlet behind the dishwasher to the area under the sink. The easiest route was taken leaving the cord exposed near the front of the cupboard. The installer was warned about this before he did it, but denied it would work out that way and failed to take responsibility and mention it after the fact. He was able to act professionally and not get upset at me when I made a mistake pulling out the dishwasher and damaged some vinyl, which I did take full responsibility for on my side. He installed the system alright otherwise, I guess...though the added faucet did leak a bit for which he had no solution since apparently a lot of them leak. Also, I was given a bid of $275 over the phone and the installer changed $299, stating that the sales person did not know the prices. I chose not to belabor this. All an all it was a satisfactory experience, though I was momentarily disappointed with the wire being exposed so near the front of the cabinet. I installed some small hooks to secure the hoses and wires that needed such. They did help me a lot, since I bought a reverse osmosis system on line and most companies would not install it, so kudos to them for helping out in when others did not or wanted a premium to do so."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

The main difference between a water softener and a water filter is what they remove from the water. A water softener is specifically designed to remove hard minerals, while a filter removes a wider range of contaminants above a certain size, such as bacteria and other impurities. If your primary goal is to remove minerals, a softener is the best choice. If you want to remove various contaminants for safety or taste, a filter is more suitable. Filters are also typically less expensive to install. Depending on your water supply's specific issues, you may need to install both systems for comprehensive treatment.

Hard water doesn’t hurt, but it might feel more abrasive, especially if you have sensitive skin. It’s also about how your skin feels after bathing. You might feel as though you have a sticky film over your body because you do—it’s all that soapy residue left behind because the hard water can’t rinse it off completely.

A good hardness level for drinking water can vary based on personal preferences, but an ideal level is 3.5 to 7 GPG. This means your water isn’t soft or hard. However, some people prefer the “fresh” taste from the minerals in hard water, while others like the smoother, “slippery” texture of soft water.

Yes, you can have both a water softener and a water filter. In fact, some manufacturers sell dual water softening and filtration systems that treat hard water and provide clean drinking water. If you’re unsure about what you need or want to discuss your options, reach out to a local water softener installation company.

Whether you need a permit or license for a water softener installation depends on your location, as requirements vary significantly. Some municipalities require the installer to hold a plumbing license, some mandate a permit and an inspection, and others require both. In some areas, no special permit or license is needed at all.

To determine the rules in your area, you can contact your local building department or consult a local water softener installer or plumber. Often, only certified professionals are authorized to pull the necessary permits, and they will typically handle the entire permitting process for you. Regardless of local laws, it is always recommended to hire a licensed professional to ensure the system is sized and installed correctly. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to check an installer’s license status.
