"Immediate Response did an excellent job, both by coming to my house immediately to replace a broken pipe for my sprinkler system that had caused water to get in part of my basement, and by replacing all the original shower and bath fixtures for my house.. I have a 1950's house, and those items were not standard. The had to find those types of fixtures for the shower, and the 3 faucet bathtub. Their pricing for all this was very reasonable, and was estimated and done by the job not by the hour. I am already set to use them again to start replacing more of the old pipes in my house.. "The yearly service works out to be $50 a month. We've had two water heaters replaced through them because of a fault in them. They're usually very responsive. I like that I can request the service online. The only thing is, I wish that there was a better avenue for emergency services. If something doesn't work right away usually it takes a couple of days to get someone out and sometimes you can't wait two days without water."

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

It takes between one and three hours to replace a hot water heater element, depending on whether you hire a pro or do the work yourself. For example, a professional plumber with all the necessary tools and experience can often finish the job in one to two hours, whereas DIY will take two to three hours because it'll involve more preparation and troubleshooting.

When installing a new furnace, it's a good time to consider other projects that can enhance your home's energy efficiency. A great first step is to get a home energy audit, which will identify areas for improvement. Common recommendations include sealing or replacing windows and adding insulation to the attic. These upgrades can help you save money on monthly utility costs. You might also consider installing a smart thermostat to make heating your home more convenient and efficient.

The average cost to replace a water heater is around $1,325, with a typical range of $900 to $1,800 for a standard replacement. The final price depends on the type of heater (tank vs. tankless), its size, fuel source (gas or electric), and the complexity of the installation. A simple one-to-one replacement will be on the lower end of the cost spectrum. However, if you are switching from one type of heater or energy source to another, you can expect labor costs to be significantly higher due to the extra work involved. It's also worth considering that while gas and electric heaters may have similar upfront costs, their long-term operating costs can differ based on local utility prices.

We recommend you turn off the unit, the power, and the water supply as soon as you notice a leak. Your water heater tank should have a dedicated shut-off valve located on the cold inlet pipes. If the valve is broken or inoperable, use the shut-off valve to your home's main water supply to stop the flow to the entire house.

Avoid touching valves or pipes directly without confirming if they are hot. Wear gloves and other safety gear to keep from coming into contact with hot levers or components when turning off your leaking water heater.

Water expands when heated and also when freezing. When water is heated, it expands by around 4%. For a full water heater, this is one of the main reasons malfunctions occur—the hot water has nowhere else to go but out. Due to the constant expansion and reduction in volume, it’s recommended (required in most places) that an expansion tank be installed.
