"Mark and the team from New Image Remodeling were excellent. They provided fair, competitive pricing and did absolutely A+ work. We are so happy with our new basement and get nothing but compliments from friends and family on how great it looks. From the start, Mark and team were extremely easy to work with. They were clear and transparent with their communication and always professional & courteous. They did a great job of working within our budget and were very flexible and accommodating even when we requested changes in the scope of work. When minor issues did pop-up (as they always do), Mark & team were on top of them right away, even coming out on the weekend if necessary. I would recommend New Image Remodeling to anyone looking to finish or remodel a portion of their home and they'll be the first call I make for any future projects."

"When we signed the Matrix contract in June 28,2018 for basement work we were told it would be done the end of October or the first of November 2018. We told them that was good because we go to Arizona the end of December 2018. When we left all that was done was rough: framing, plumbing, electrical and ceiling. In May 2019 Matrix started work again and finally June 17, 2019 the final inspection was done. If Matrix overbooked jobs, Matrix should let the customer the customer know and not leave them hanging. Being overbooked was probably why the drywall job and the soffit run to cover the ceiling beam was less than professional. We give the following grades: grade A to the project manager, the other work teams. grade C to Matrix as a company. Thank you, Jack and Bonnie Childs"

"I truly cannot say enough incredible things about Dan and his spouse s work, integrity, honesty, and humbleness! We are absolutely blown way by their professional work and the outcome. They did things the right way, not the cheap/easy way. They provided professional expertise and advice when needed. Our basement completely exceeded our expectations and now we have a whole list of things to hire Dan and Katie for. We cannot thank you enough!!!!! I HIGHLY recommend hiring them for any project."

"I gave Andrew some blueprints for a mud kitchen I had found on Etsy and he put it together and stained it within a day! It was the perfect birthday present for my daughter. Would hire again!"

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

The best type of basement ventilation system depends on your budget, the moisture in your basement’s air, and the types of windows you have down there. You should consider all of these factors when choosing a ventilation system. However, the most effective method for basement ventilation is an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) or a whole-house ventilation system, which preheats or precools incoming air from the outside while also managing water vapor.

Making a window in a basement larger costs an average of $4,200. You’ll need to pay an average of $550 to have a structural engineer plan the project, $500 to $1,500 for the installation labor, and an average of $2,200 for the excavation and window well installation. The remainder will go toward pulling permits, installing trim, and repairing drywall on the interior.

Since DIYing a basement remodel isn't typically advised, there are some ways that you can still save money on this project without putting yourself in danger. Some ways to save money on a basement remodel include:

  • Painting walls yourself versus including in the cost of the remodel

  • Installing light fixtures yourself

  • Choosing prefabricated fixtures, like cabinets, over custom ones

  • Choosing a budget-friendly flooring option, like laminate or vinyl flooring, and add rugs where necessary

Adding a bathroom to your basement can increase your home value since homes with multiple bathrooms sell for more. The return on investment (ROI) for a basement bathroom is 50% to 75%. The actual return varies with your home and location. Adding a half bath to your home increases the value by 2.9% while finishing a basement increases the home value by 6.6%.

A walkout basement is considered to be partially below grade because at least one wall is entirely exposed. In some cases and in specific municipalities, inspectors and appraisers will still count walkout basements as below grade, which means the space can’t serve as living space or be rented out. If you intend on using the area as living space or a separate apartment, you should check with your local building department to make sure it’s legal to do so.
