Recessed lighting comes in hundreds of designs. Modern LED recessed lights have a longer lifespan than traditional incandescent bulbs. In the can vs. canless recessed lighting discussion, both have their merits depending on your budget and ceiling space.

The type of lighting you choose can have a big part in the aesthetic and function of your space. Ambient lighting refers to indirect or diffused lighting that evenly reaches most areas of the space. The main difference between can vs. canless lighting lies in their design. Can lighting is the most traditional form of recessed lighting and includes a can-shaped housing to hold the bulb. Can lighting also has a mounting frame that secures the light to the ceiling between the joists.

Canless lighting doesn’t have a recessed housing design. Instead, it has a single unit with an integrated junction box that connects directly to your home’s electrical wiring through the ceiling. Most canless designs have thin, slimline discs with LED lighting.

Just as fluorescent lights are more efficient than incandescent lights, LED lights are more efficient to run than fluorescent lights. The specifics will vary from product to product, but LED lights are typically twice as efficient as equivalent fluorescent lights. A 13-watt CFL bulb can replace a 60-watt incandescent bulb, but a 6- to 8-watt LED bulb can offer the same amount of brightness. Fluorescent lights offer about 50 lumens per watt, while LEDs offer about 100 lumens per watt. LED light bulbs typically last two to three times as long as CFL bulbs, too.

For example, if you’re installing a lamppost for aesthetic lighting purposes, you’ll want to consider placing it in a highly-visible spot or a location that illuminates a yard feature. Use it as a focal point of your outdoor living space or use it to light up a garden or walkway. Be sure, however, to avoid any obstructions like trees or other structures that might be in the way or will cast a shadow.
