"GM Electric was a great choice and we could not be happier with the work Gracen did for us. He responded quickly to our call and was friendly, professional, and did a great job getting our multiple electrical concerns handled promptly. "The only problem I had with NextGen was that the city came to me after the installation and said there was no electrical permit pulled for the job and that the local electric company should have opened our electrical service, not NextGen."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

If your plug feels hot to the touch, it’s likely a sign of an electrical issue that needs immediate attention. Check for signs of melting or discoloration around the plug, as well as any burning smells or smoke. If you notice any of these signs, immediately unplug any devices and do not use the outlet again until it’s been inspected by a qualified electrician.

Each meter should have a serial number printed or engraved on the face of the meter. Make sure the serial number of the meter you are reading matches your account with the power company. If you live in an apartment complex, the meters are likely located all together. Yours should be labeled according to your apartment unit.

If wiring in a relatively modern home is damaged due to sudden events like a fire, a tree falling into the house, or a flood, then homeowners insurance is very likely to cover the cost of replacing the wire.

However, if it’s determined that wiring failed or started the fire because of age, neglect, or not meeting current electrical standards, then insurance won’t be covering any replacement. Also, insurance policies may charge more for particularly old kinds of wiring like aluminum wiring or deny applications altogether.

To fix a tripped light switch, locate your home's electrical panel and identify the tripped circuit breaker. It will be in the "off" or neutral position. Flip the breaker entirely to the "off" position, then switch it back to the "on" position. If the breaker trips again immediately, there may be a short circuit or overload in the system, requiring further investigation. If the switch still doesn't work after resetting the breaker, check for loose wires or faulty components in the switch itself. It is always best to consult a licensed electrician for persistent issues and when in doubt.

There are several things to try to repair a broken outlet. Whether it's fixable or not may depend on the problem and the type of outlet itself. Start by testing the circuit with an electrical tester and ensuring the breaker switch to the circuit functions as it should. Loose wires are sometimes the culprit and are repairable by fixing the connections.
