My name is Nick, I've been in and out of the construction world for the better part of the last 15 years doing everything from footings, foundations, and flatwork concrete through finish carpentry and paint. "Beware potential customers! My experience with Afloorable was a complete nightmare. Despite them presenting as professionals, the end result was a disaster. I had my shower floor done by them, only to find a large puddle accumulating by the drain - an obvious indication of an incorrect pitch. When I brought this to the owner's attention, he promised to rectify the error, urging me to remove the old floor. But, he left me hanging for weeks with a torn-up floor and no follow-up. To add insult to injury, they managed to damage the cable to my heated floors during the tile installation. From their actions, it seems evident that they lack the expertise and finesse required for tiling, possibly being more accustomed to simpler click flooring installations. Even the simple courtesy of cleaning up after a job was overlooked. I provided a dumpster on-site, yet they chose to litter my driveway with their waste. It's heartbreaking to invest $6000 in labor, expecting quality, only to be left with such a subpar result. I implore you, look elsewhere for a genuine tradesman who truly values their work and respects their clients."

The choice of whether to tile or use an acrylic tub surround is up to you and can be based on a number of factors, including aesthetics, cost, waterproofing, ease of cleaning, and maintenance.

Tile is a beautiful, classic bathtub surround choice; while tile installation cost is higher, it’s customizable and offers visual appeal. Tile is also harder to clean and presents waterproofing problems because of grout lines. Acrylic surrounds can be more affordable, don’t require much maintenance, and are easier to clean. However, they aren’t usually as visually appealing and may need to be replaced if they become damaged.

Just because you can, doesn’t always mean you should. You can apply new tile over existing tile in a bathroom, but the new tile may not look great if you lay it over worn, cracked, or uneven tiles. The adhesive may not be able to attach the new tile to the old tile properly, and this will add more weight to the drywall.

It takes more time and effort, but removing existing tiles before retiling a bathroom is worth it.

You can lay tile directly on a plywood countertop, but if it’s a high-traffic surface in a kitchen, it’s better to add a moisture-resistant base. Plywood is susceptible to moisture, so if dampness seeps through from the surface around the sink or where you prep food, it can cause the plywood to warp, leading to grout damage, cracked tiles, or mold growth under the surface. 

The grout shade you choose comes down to personal taste and preference. A darker grout will give you a more dramatic and noticeable contrast with the tile around it; however, lighter grout helps create a more uniform look when blending the colors together. Additionally, a darker grout combined with a patterned tile could be overwhelming to the eye, while lighter grout makes the pattern stand out as the main focus.

Porcelain and ceramic tiles are made from clay, but porcelain tiles are fired in a kiln at a higher temperature. This makes them more durable, but it also means porcelain is more expensive than ceramic at $3 to $5 more per square foot.

Even with the higher price point, many people choose porcelain over ceramic because there are more color and design options.
