"Tom did a great job on our dining room and kitchen floors. He worked very hard and knocked out both floors in a day and half. Highly recommend Top Notch for all your flooring needs. Very reasonably priced and appreciated the military discount!"

"We hired Brian (owner) and Pat of NE-Tri FLooring to tile our new walk-in shower. OMG, the workmanship is phenomenal!!! Then we had them do our kitchen backsplash. Excellent workmanship, yet again. Then ok how about new flooring Wow!!!!! Beautiful. We kept on adding. now on to the man cave. More flooring, more tiling. Our house is a new build and we certainly could not have gotten all things done without their help. As you can see we love NE-Tile and Flooring And I am certain you will too. If I could have given more stars I would have! Hmmm, Do I see more work for these guys in the future? You never know. Most likely! Dave and Sharon M. (woof) too. ."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

It’s best to start with tiling the shower floor before moving on to the walls for the most visually-pleasing results. When taking on any tiling project, you’ll want the wall tiles to “sit” neatly on the floor tiles rather than overlapping them. Finishing your floor tiles first will allow you to place your wall tiles without any gaps, holes, or awkward intersections.

The difference between floor and wall tiles is that floor tiles generally have higher strength and porosity ratings than wall tiles. Wall tiles are typically weaker and more likely to crack or become damaged under sustained pressure like high foot traffic.

For this reason, avoid using wall tiles on floors and vice versa.

The number of shower niches you need (or want) depends on the size of the shower and how many bathroom products you plan on storing. If you keep it simple with just soap and shampoo, the one shower niche will probably do the trick. But if you’re adding scrubs and soaks, you may need to think about installing two or more.

It’s not a good idea to lay tile and grout on the same day. The adhesive or thin-set that sticks the tiles to the surface needs plenty of time to dry before you can grout. Wait for 24 to 48 hours, depending on moisture levels in the space. The tiles can become misaligned and more prone to damage if you don’t wait.

Thinset mortar is the best adhesive for ceramic tiles on concrete. It is easy to work with and has a slower dry time than mastic or epoxy mortars. This longer dry time gives the installer more time to adjust tiles, which is especially useful for DIYers who may not have tile installation experience. It can also be built up to help level any depressions or gaps in the concrete subfloor.
